J.R. Martinez Career

Career

Martinez enlisted in the Army in September 2002 and underwent Basic and Advanced Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was given the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 11B upon his graduation. He was sent to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 522nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, after arriving in Fort Campbell in January 2003.

He was sent to the Middle East in February 2003. Martinez was driving a Humvee when its left front tire struck an IED; Martinez had to deal with smoke inhalation and severe burns on more than 35% of his body two months later. He was evacuated to Ramstein, Germany, for immediate care and transfer to the Army Institute of Surgical Burn Center at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas. He spent 34 months at BAMC and has undergone 33 plastic surgery and skin graft procedures.

Martinez has risen to fame as a motivational speaker. The WillReturn Council of Assurant Employee Benefits named him a "Shining Star of Perseverance" in 2008. The nonprofit Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) honoured him with the Veteran Leadership Award the following year.

Brot Monroe was cast in ABC's daytime drama All My Children as Brot Monroe in 2008. His character had also served with the Army in Iraq and was wounded in combat. Martinez appeared on the program for the first time on Friday, November 7, 2008. He appeared on Army Wives' season six finale as a physical therapist assisting injured veterans. He began working on SAF3 in 2013 portraying a Los Angeles County Firefighter/Paramedic and veteran USAF Pararescue Jumper Alfonso Rivera.

When being treated for his burn injury at Brooke Army Medical Center, Martinez first began helping fellow burn victims. He has served as a member of The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors' board of directors. He appeared at the Phoenix Society's World Burn Congress in 2008 and was a featured speaker at the 2010 World Burn Congress. Jenna Bullen, a fellow burn survivor, appeared on "Dancing with the Stars" as his guest and also taped a public service announcement on behalf of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors. Martinez is also involved with "Operation Finally Home," an organization that provides housing for American veterans and their families in the hopes of helping them live mortgage-free. "We're not just giving them keys to unlock the door and let them inside," Said Martinez of the project. We're also giving them the opportunity, but it's also important to know that there are people who value them, the key to happiness, and the key to new beginnings.

Martinez often shares the tale about how his mother encouraged him to walk eight weeks after major foot surgery. Martinez's victory was also his first victory for his partner, Karina Smirnoff, who was also named in the first place. After a routine that led him to victory, he credits her with assisting him in excelling in routine.

Martinez's first appearance as a radio host was on December 21, 2012, when he stood in for Bill Carroll of KFI-AM 640. On January 24, 2013, he began his regularly scheduled radio show on Sunday evenings.
