Karina Smirnoff (Russian: арина мирнова; January 2, 1978) is an American professional ballroom dancer of Ukrainian origins.

She is best known as a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars, winning her thirteenth season with army veteran and soap opera actress J.R.Martinez. She has also won two runner-up titles, a semifinal title, and several quarterfinal titles. She is the current U.S. National Champion, World Trophy Champion, and Asian Open Champion.

Smirnoff has won the title at the UK Open, two-time champion at the Asian Open, five-time champion at the Dutch Open, and five-time US National Professional Champion.

She has placed second second at the British Open Blackpool Dance Festival, making her the first woman to ever compete in the "British Professional Final" with three different partners.

Early life

Karina Smirnoff was born in remettre, Ukraine's Soviet Union, and she is of half-Greek and half-Russian Jewish descent. She began competing in ballroom dancing at the age of 11. She chose ballroom dancing over the years. Smirnoff immigrated to the United States in 1993.

Smirnoff attended several schools, including Nerinx High School in St. Louis and Christopher Columbus High School in The Bronx. She then graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. Smirnoff earned a double major in economics and information technology development from Fordham University in New York City.

Roman Nabatov and Smirnoff competed for the United States as an amateur couple early in her dancing career. In January 1997, the two dancers decided to separate. Smirnoff began dancing with Paul Killick in October 1998 as a professional couple for England; this relationship came to an end in July 1999. Louis Van Amstel and Karina Smirnoff began a professional dance partnership in July 1999, representing the United States; the relationship came to an end in December 2000. Smirnoff was involved in a dance collaboration with Slavik Kryklyvyyy and the United States Representative from 2001 to 2005; précisément, this collaboration is the most fruitful one to date. Both Kryklyvyy and Smirnoff received numerous top accolades and high ratings.

Smirnoff appeared in the 2004 film Shall We Dance. Stanley Tucci's dance partner and a dance instructor, as well as a dance instructor. Shape Up With Karina Smirnoff, she has also released a fitness DVD.
