Irv Gotti Career

Career

Russell Simmons, who assisted Def Jam with the success of DMX and Jay-Z, gave Irv Gotti his own line under Def Jam. A Murder, Inc. logo appeared on the screen, and Irv Gotti decided to use the name for his company because Murder, Inc. put out hits for murder and Irv wanted to put out hit records.

The name Murder Inc., Irv, Ja Rule, and others were all involved in a well-known rivalry with G-Unit Records, Aftermath Records, and Shady Records concerning the period between 50 Cent and Ja Rule. Following a 2003 inquiry, which culminated in a raid on Murder, Inc.'s Manhattan offices, Gotti and his brother Christopher were charged with money laundering in connection with suspected financial transactions connected with New York City drug kingpin Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff. A jury convicted the brothers of all charges on December 2, 2005. The brand could be changed to appeal more to the general public.

Irv will change the name to Universal Motown and sign Vanessa Carlton under The Inc. banner. Heroes and Thieves, Vanessa Carlton's third album, Heroes and Thieves, was released on October 9, 2007, by Rick Rubin and Stephan Jenkins.

Gotti said in a chat with Angie Martinez in early May 2009 that his firm, Murder Inc., was leaving Universal Records.

Murder Inc. was relaunched in September 2013 as an umbrella brand under Irv Gotti's new name, Visionary.
