During the year, he earned the Player of the Month award for October and was also named in the PFA Team of the Year.
Sonko's first season in the Premier League was a blast. He received a straight red card from Aston Villa for tripping Luke Moore in the penalty area, causing Reading to lose 2–1. He was still in the middle of more controversy during a match against Chelsea on October 14, 2006, when his challenge left goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini unconscious. Cudicini was carried off the field wearing a neck brace. Sonko expressed fear after being sent death threats in connection with the Chelsea match. Sonko's contract with Reading began on December 11, 2006, extending his stay at the Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2010. However, he suffered knee ligament damage while playing for Reading in a 3–1 home win over Sheffield United on January 20, 2007; the rest of the 2006–07 season will be postponed. He scored against Charlton Athletic but was also sent off in the game.
Sonko signed for Premier League Stoke City on August 29, 2008, but it could climb to £2.25 million based on appearances. In a 3–2 loss to Everton on September 14, he made his Stoke debut on September 14, 2008. However, under Tony Pulis' leadership, he was unable to keep his place in the team and was mostly used as a substitute. Stoke lost by 3–0 on December 20, 2008, after a tragically missed tackle on Morten Gamst Pedersen that helped Blackburn win by a 3–0 victory, Pulis referred to it as 'abysmal defense.' When the Potters finished in 14th place, Sonko only appeared as a replacement for the remainder of the 2008–09 season.
