Julian de Guzman Career

Playing career

Representatives of Olympique Marseille learned De Guzman while playing for the North Scarborough youth soccer team in Toronto. De Guzman, who spent time with Marseille's reserve team, joined the Marseille reserve team and became a first-team member with 1. In the German 2, FC Saarbrücken is the best in the world 2. In the 2000–01 season, he made two appearances, and the 2001–02 season, where he made 19 appearances. He hasn't scored in 21 appearances.

He was promoted to Hannover 96 in 2002, becoming the third Canadian to play in the German First Bundesliga. He made 20 appearances in both 2003–04 and 2004–05 seasons during the 2002–03 season, as well as 32 in 2004–05.

In 2005, De Guzman's Hannover deal came to an end, allowing him to transfer to a different team with no transfer fee. He was heavily linked to a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, where he would have joined Canadian captain Paul Stalteri. He decided against moving to London due to the inability in the center of midfield, and instead joined Deportivo La Corua in Spain, becoming the first Canadian to play in La Liga. de Guzman was named team's player of the season after being instrumental in the club's remarkable recovery in 2007–2008 to prevent relegation and gain a spot in the UEFA Cup. In 95 appearances, he scored one goal. In 2005 against the Spanish giants Real Madrid, Deportivo scored his first goal. In the summer of 2009, Deportivo's deal came to an end.

De Guzman signed as a designated player in September 2009, becoming the first ever Canadian Designated Player in league history. His salary was $1,910,746 per year. The Canadian midfielder has signed a three-year contract with MLS to play in MLS. In an away game against the Los Angeles Galaxy on September 19, 2009, De Guzman made his club debut against the Los Angeles Galaxy. He made five appearances in the 2009 season. In July 2010, De Guzman was able to convince former Deportivo teammate and friend Mista to join Toronto. De Guzman was chastised for his inconsistent appearances as a designated player in the 2010 season, making 36 appearances in all sports. Much skepticism was left over de Guzman and Toronto's future as a result of the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft, meaning the Vancouver Whitecaps FC or Portland Timbers could select him if they were able to pay a Designated Player Salary. However, he was untouched going into the sixth round when Vancouver selected O'Brian White, allowing Toronto to shield one player from the remaining four rounds in which they shielded de Guzman. De Guzman revealed on January 5, 2011 that he would have knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus, which may have plagued his results in the first quarter.

Many analysts agree that this new style would enhance de Guzman's skills and help him to flourish in the MLS in January 2011. It was announced ten days before the new season began, that de Guzman would miss this first game against Vancouver and possibly a few more due to winter's inability to aggravate the recent positive surgery. In CONCACAF Champions League play against Tauro FC on August 18, 2011, De Guzman scored his first goal for Toronto against Tauro FC, a 2–0 away win.

de Guzman was traded to FC Dallas in exchange for forward Andrew Wiedeman. On July 18, De Guzman made his Dallas debut against San Jose Earthquakes, who lost by a 2–1 draw. During the 2012 season, De Guzman was a member of FC Dallas. His deal came to an end after 2012, and the club made him available for the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft.

De Guzman joined SSV Jahn Regensburg on the last day of the 2012-13 winter transfer window. In a 1–5 loss to Hertha BSC, he made his team debut on February 3 and played all 90 minutes. Jahn Regensburg was relegated from 2nd place at the end of the season. Bundesliga, when De Guzman signed in January, he had a clause that if they were relegated, he would immediately become a free agent. He had made 15 appearances for the club.

De Guzman signed for Skoda Xanthi in the Superleague Greece following the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup in late July. On August 1, his debut in a third round UEFA Europa League match against Standard Liège was his third appearance. On August 8, he scored in the second leg of the series, but Skoda Xanthi would lose 4–2 on aggregate. In a 3–0 loss to P.A.O.K. on August 17, he made his club debut for the club. Since his deal came to an end, he hoped for a team in or near Germany to be closer to his family, but he hasn't found anything as of yet.

Following a training stint with the MLS club, he was expected to be signed by Columbus Crew, but the North American Soccer League's Ottawa Fury signed him on March 27, 2015. He made his Carolina debut against the Carolina RailHawks on April 4.

De Guzman re-signed with Ottawa for the 2016 season on December 16, 2015. He was then named captain of the club on March 9, 2016.

De Guzman was also selected in the 23-man roster for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup; Canada won group A with seven points before being defeated by Honduras in the quarterfinals. He was then selected in the all-tournament squad alongside fellow Canadian Michael Klukowski for the second time in a row.

De Guzman scored a superb yet turbulent quick free kick in Tosaint Ricketts' first international goal leading the Canadian team to a well-earned draw in June 1, 2011. In a 2-1 victory over Saint Lucia in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match at Beausejour Stadium, De Guzman earned his fiftieth cap for Canada's senior men's team.

De Guzman started for Canada against El Salvador in a 2018 World Cup qualifier match, defeating Paul Stalteri for Canada's most cap, earning his 85th cap.

Coaching and executive career

De Guzman resigned from soccer and his transfer to the Ottawa Fury as an assistant coaching position on January 30, 2017. Following the departure of head coach Paul Dalglish, De Guzman was appointed interim head coach until the 2017 season begins on August 15, 2017.

Guzman, a veteran of Ottawa's, was named general manager by De Guzman on December 21, 2017 alongside new head coach Nikola Popovic. He served in the role until the Fury halted operations at the end of 2019, after not being banned from participating in the US-based USL Championship.
