Diana Matheson Life

Diana Beverly Matheson (born April 6, 1984) is a Canadian international soccer player.

She appears on the Canada women's national soccer team and plays for Utah Royals FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

She competed for the Washington Spirit and Team Struggen in the NWSL and Team Stremmen in the Toppserien, Norway's top division league.

In the 92nd minute against France at the 2012 Summer Olympics, she is best known for scoring the bronze medal-winning goal for Canada.

She also earned a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games as part of the senior national team.

Early life

Matheson, a student at White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville, Ontario, where she received the Principal's Award for athletics and academics. She won the national championship in 2001 and was runner-up in 2002 as a member of the Ontario provincial team from 1999 to 2002. In 2002, she became the team's captain. Matheson, who was playing for the Oakville Women's team in 2002, was a 2002 Ontario Cup champion and club national women's champion.

Matheson studied economics at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, and was named Ivy League Player of the Year in 2007 and Princeton Women's Athlete of the Year in 2008.

Matheson, a freshman in 2004, was voted first-team All-Ivy pick and was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year. She received first-team All-America and first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region awards and was one of 12 finalists for SoccerBuzz Freshman of the Year. She was the week's Ivy Rookie of the Week. She scored five goals, second-most on the team, and had a team-high of seven assists (ranked third in the Ivy League) during her sophomore season. She was one of only two unanimous first-team All-Ivy picks. Matheson received first-team all-region and NSCAA second-team all-region awards from SoccerBuzz. She played in all 14 games the remainder of the season after missing the season-opening trip to Florida to compete with the Canadian national team. Matheson, a junior in 2006, captained the squad and led the Tigers with eight goals and five assists for 21 points, despite missing five games to prepare with the Canadian national team. She was unanimously selected for the first team of All-Ivy. Matheson, a senior, had missed the first seven games to participate in the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup in China. With a four-assist appearance against Rutgers, she earned a point in seven straight games of the 10 against Stanford. She was Princeton's third four-time first-team all-league honoree and seventh Player of the Year while serving as co-captain of the team.

Club career

Diana Matheson was a member of Team Struggen in Oslo, Norway, and also in the annual Cup competition for the second half of the 2008 season. She returned to the same team in 2009 for the first half of 2010 before national team duty took her away. She can be seen in a video made by her Norwegian team's team.

Matheson would be joining the Washington Spirit as part of the NWSL Player Allocation Team, which is a team in the newly formed National Women's Soccer League, in early 2013. On April 15, 2013, she made her debut against the Boston Breakers in the Spirit's inaugural match. In the club's home opener against the Western New York Flash on April 20, 2013, she scored on a late penalty. Matheson had been selected as a midfielder to the NWSL 2013 Best XI First Team at the end of the 2013 season.

Matheson helped the Spirit reach their first ever playoff appearance in 2014 with eight goals and six assists during the regular season.

Matheson played three goals and had two assists in just nine games since joining the team late in 2015 due to injury and competing in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

She scored four goals in 2016, tied for second on the team, in second place. Matheson currently holds the all-time record for the most goals (23) and most assists (12) for the Spirit. The Washington Spirit advanced to the NWSL Championship game against the Western New York Flash in 2016. The game was tied 2–2 after extra time and advanced to penalties. Matheson was the fifth penalty taker for the Spirit, but Washington was trailing 2–3 and needed to score to keep the game alive. Sabrina D'Angelo saved her penalty, securing the Flash's victory.

Many of the Washington Spirit's veterans were sold during the off-season. Matheson was traded to the Seattle Reign in January 2017 in exchange for Arielle Ships and Seattle's third round pick in the 2018 NWSL College Draft.

Matheson tore her ACL while training with the Canadian National team in February, so she will miss the entire 2017 season. She was sent to the Utah Royals in exchange for Yael Averbuch and Utah's third round draft pick at the 2018 NWSL College Draft. Matheson never appeared in a Seattle game.

Matheson played in 21 games for Utah in 2018, scoring two goals. She returned to Utah for the 2019 season, but she missed the 2019 season due to a foot injury with the Canadian National team that would necessitated surgery, causing her to miss the 2019 season.

International career

Matheson, a regular player for Canada, is known for her quickness and ability to hold her place in an international team known for its physical approach to the sport despite only having a height of 5 ft 0+14 in (1.53 m). Matheson made her national team debut at the Algarve Cup in March 2003. Matheson participated in the 2007 Women's World Cup, winning third in all three of Canada's group stage matches, but not advance to the knockout round. Matheson was named to her first Olympic squad in 2008, and she appeared in all four games for Canada after being disqualified in the quarterfinals by the United States.

Matheson appeared in her second straight World Cup in 2011 and Canada failed to advance past the group stage. Matheson earned the gold medal against the defending champions Brazil at the 2011 Pan American Games. After extra time and went to penalties, the gold medal match was tied 1–1. Matheson was the first person to take a penalty for Canada and scored, and Canada defeated Brazil 4–3 on penalties to win their first-ever Pan American Games gold medal.

Matheson was called to Canada's Olympic squad for the second time in 2012, where she appeared in every minute of Canada's six matches. Canada lost in extra time to the United States in the semifinals after defeating Great Britain in the quarterfinals. Matheson scored the game winning goal in the 92nd minute to defeat France 1–0, securing Canada's first ever medal in women's soccer at the Olympic Games.

In a friendly match against Japan in October 2014, Matheson suffered a torn ACL. This injury put her participation in the 2015 World Cup, which was being held in Canada, in jeopardy. Matheson returned in time to be selected in Canada's World Cup squad. In Canada's quarterfinal loss to England, she was only fit enough to make one substitute appearance, and she was only able to play in one substitute role.

Matheson was chosen to her third Olympic team in 2016, where Canada received the bronze medal for the second time in consecutive Olympics. Matheson earned her 200th cap for Canada on October 14, 2018. 183 of those caps were granted.

Matheson had been ruled out of the 2019 World Cup due to a foot injury that would necessitates surgery, according to Canada Soccer in May.

Matheson resigned from soccer in July 2021.
