Tesho Akindele Career

Club career

Tesho Akindele was born in Canada to a Nigerian father and a Canadian mother, and he and his family immigrated to the United States at the age of eight. He grew up in Thornton, Colorado, and was a standout for Northglenn High School, refusing an invitation to join the Colorado Rapids academy at the age of 17 to concentrate on academics.

Akindele played four years of college soccer at the Colorado School of Mines, where he was the school's all-time goals leader with 76 goals scored and was a four-time All-American. In 2012, he ranked second in the country in goals scored, and was named First Team NSCAA All-American and 2012 RMAC Offensive Player of the Year for his efforts. In 2010, Akindele was the first player to win three straight hat tricks in the NSCAA First Team All-American and RMAC Freshman of the Year.

In 2013, Akindele made a single appearance for the Real Colorado Foxes, a USL PDL team.

Akindele was drafted by FC Dallas in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, making him the most highly drafted NCAA Division II player in MLS history. Akindele made his professional debut against Seattle Sounders FC on April 12, 2014. Akindele was named MLS Rookie of the Year after scoring seven goals in 26 appearances.

Akindele was sold by Dallas on December 9, 2018 in exchange for $100,000 in Targeted Allocation funds and $50,000 in 2020. In Orlando's season opener against New York City FC, he scored on his debut, a 2–2 draw. Akindele was opted out of Orlando's 2020 season, so the club kept him with the team for 2020. Akindele set the fastest goal scored in Orlando City history on May 1, 2021, intercepting Nick Hagglund's backpass and scoring the first goal of a 3–0 victory over FC Cincinnati in 31 seconds, beating the previous record of 63 seconds set by Chris Mueller in 2018. Akindele's choice for the 2022 season was chosen by Orlando following the 2021 season's completion.

International career

Akindele participated in a youth development camp for Canada's national team in 2009 and played for Canada's U-17 national team in a friendly against Costa Rica on April 2, 2009. Akindele had turned down a call-up from Canada with the intention to represent the United States, rather than the United States, and on January 9, 2015, he was called up to the United States senior team camp ahead of friendly matches against Chile and Panama. He did not participate in either friendly because he did not have an American passport at the time of the games.

On April 14, 2015, Canada coach Benito Floro told reporters that Akindele would represent Canada rather than the United States, and that on June 2, Akindele was given a call-up to the Canadian national team for two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Dominica. On June 11, he made his Canadian debut against Dominica. In the return leg against Dominica at BMO Field on June 16, he scored his first goal for Canada against Dominica, a 4–0 victory. In a 1–1 friendly draw with Azerbaijan in June 2016, Akindele scored his second goal for Canada.

Akindele was called up by Canada on July 23 as an injury replacement for Ayo Akinola, despite being left out of the original 23-man squad for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. When Canada advanced to the semi-finals with a 2–0 win, he came as a 70th-minute substitute against Costa Rica.
