Personal life
Nelson is Mark and Janie Nelson's son and the youngest of four children. Nelson attended Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, North Carolina. At the University of Southern California, he researched screenwriting. Nelson is a Jew.
Career
Nelson first became interested in the performing arts by auditioning for a school musical to impress a girl. He appeared in numerous local shows, including Piedmont Opera's Amahl and the Night Visitors. He is a dancer and has appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on three occasions, in addition to acting and singing. Nelson studied at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and the Stagedoor Manor performing arts school to further refine his craft. At Jenkins' Actors Group academy, he also trained under Burgess Jenkins.
In 2012, his first film appearance was as the unidentified tribute to District 3 in The Hunger Games. Thence was followed by Alone but not Alone the next year. The movie, which was shot in Virginia and Tennessee, was shot before The Hunger Games. Nelson appeared in Medeas, The Judge, and The Best of Me both in 2013 and 2014. Kevin, Jennifer Lopez and John Corbett's son, appeared in The Boy Next Door in 2015. Nelson referred to the experience as a "great job," and said he loved working with director Rob Cohen.
In the role of a teen werewolf in Teen Wolf, Nelson's first foray into television was in the role of a teen werewolf, Derek Hale. In three episodes from the third and fourth seasons, he appeared as the teen version of Tyler Hoechlin's character. He went on to appear in Criminal Minds and Comedy Bang! Before appearing in The Deleted, which aired in 2016, Bang! Nelson stars Andy on There's...Johnny!, a film based on Johnny Carson's backstage operations of The Tonight Show during Johnny Carson's tenure in the 1970s. In November 2017, the series was released on Hulu. He is starring Stefanie Owen and Lili Taylor in the forthcoming drama film Paper Spiders.
