Early life
Leon grew up in Los Angeles' suburbs as the youngest in a tight-knit family, born to a Peruvian father and a Chinese seamstress mother.
Early career
Leon worked in industry for a decade, most recently as the design director at American clothing chain Gap. Consequently, he spent time at Burberry during the company's renaissance under Rose Marie Bravo's administration.
Career
Lim and Leon went to Hong Kong in early 2001, aged 25. On their return home, they were inspired to open a store in the United States. Its aim was to bring Havaya and Topshop to the United States and to showcase emerging American fashion brands such as Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, and Rodarte. After considering various names (including Airport and Terminal), the two entrepreneurs finally settled on Opening Ceremony. Leon and Lim then to the New York State Small Business Development Center at SUNY for assistance in refining their company plan and getting a company loan, and each contributed $10,000 of their own money to the Opening Ceremony.
Humberto Leon, the brand's co-creative director, was announced in July 2011. Leon and Lim's debut collection was released in 2012. Ellsworth Kelly, a painter from upstate New York, influenced the first collection. Lim and Leon are credited with revitalizing the brand, which had been in steady decline since Kenzo Takada's retirement in 1999, by infusing youthful exuberance and sensibility into its clothing. The brand's modern approach to layout and communications has paved the way for the brand's revival in recent years.
Leon was a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and an advisor to Parsons School of Design.
In June 2019, Leon and Lim departed from Kenzo's role to concentrate on the Opening Ceremony.
