Zoe Terakes wrote an open letter to the Sydney Festival written by a group of people, including Daya Czepanski, David Campbell, and Michaela Banas, explaining why trans representation is so important when describing a trans character's tale. In reaction to the letter, Hedwig's creators, John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, released a statement saying that they did not believe Hedwig was transgender and that no one was qualified to play the role. However, Showtune Productions, the Australian producers, have cancelled the show. Sheridan explained to the Sydney Morning Herald how this letter and cyber bullying triggered shock and serious mental health problems, including twice considering suicide.
