Early life
Donald was educated at Littlemoss High School in Droylsden and spent time as a vehicle painter. A young DJ's musical tastes were heavily influenced by his brother Colin's vinyl collection, which included electronic acts such as Kraftwerk, John Foxx, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) and Gary Numan. As a youth, Donald became interested in dancing and frequented the burgeoning breakdancing scene in the Greater Manchester area, where he first met future bandmate Jason Orange. At his Manchester office, he applied for Nigel Martin-Smith's latest boy band project and was selected. The organisation was eventually known as Take That.

Career
Take That, Nigel Martin-Smith recruited Donald, Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Mark Owen, and Robbie Williams to form a British boyband. The band enjoyed five years of success until Williams left in 1995, leaving them as a quartet. During the band's first year, Donald appeared less on lead vocals than Barlow, Owen, and Williams, but he did appear lead vocal on the album "Never Forget," which debuted at No. 158. In 1995, there was one in the United Kingdom.
Barlow, Owen, and Orange, Donald's cousins, arrived to the difficult decision that Take That would break in early 1996. They told Donald, who was not happy, but went along with their decision. Following the break, Donald attempted to return to DJing as a solo artist on unreleased single "Speak Without Words." Not long after the split, Donald confessed to being so ill that he might have the intention of committing suicide by drowning himself in the River Thames.
Take That revived and announced The Ultimate Tour in the summer of 2006, the first Hits album, Never Forget: The Ultimate Collection, in 2005.
