Richard "Ricky" Wilson (born 17 January 1978) is an English singer-songwriter and frontman of Kaiser Chiefs' five-piece band.
Wilson was a member of Runston Parva (later known as Parva), a group of Kaiser Chiefs members prior to the band's formation in 2003.
Wilson was announced as a mentor on The Voice UK on September 19, 2013.
He was the winning coach on both the fourth and fifth seasons of the show, being the first coach to win two years in a row.
Wilson departed the show after three seasons, following the show's transfer to ITV.
Early life
Wilson was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, to Geoff Wilson, a television presenter. James is his brother.
He attended Leeds Grammar School after Ghyll Royd primary school and then went to Leeds Metropolitan University and completed his BA (Hons) degree in Graphic Arts and Design in 2000 before embarking on his master's degree in Art and Design. He spent a year at Leeds College of Art and Design before the band's big break.
Personal life
Wilson was known for wearing stripy blazers, waistcoats, turn-up jeans, and winkle picker shoes in the early days of Kaiser Chiefs, a style that earned him the Shockwaves NME Award for Best Dressed Person in 2006. He has lately adopted a more casual clothing style. Wilson is best known for his vivacious stage presence, scaling scaffolding, standing on the safety fence, and in some instances crowd surfing. Wilson says he likes to "get out and see the crowd and see what they smell like." Occasionally, such activities have resulted in injury, such as torn ankle ligaments after bouncing off stage during a Portuguese concert.
Wilson was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Leeds in May 2006. When trying to walk on a pedestrian crossing, he was struck by a car, suffering bruising and a broken toe, resulting in him being flipped over the roof rather than trapped underneath.
Wilson began a relationship with celebrity stylist Grace Zito in early 2015. They became engaged in April 2018 and married in June 2021.
Wilson and the band are supporters of Amnesty International and Nordoff-Robbins music therapy.
Career
Wilson, as well as Nick Hodgson and Andrew White, formed the band Runston Parva. Following their release from university, the band reformed as Parva, with their old friends, Simon Rix and Nick Baines. Following Mantra Recordings' dissolution, the band earned a new contract; they were later dropped. They had just recently released their debut album 22 and their first three singles.
Following this, the group decided to re-form for the third time, with the intention to sign a new long-term record label and debut new music, now known as Kaiser Chiefs. Their name was derived from the Kaizer Chiefs, a South African football team. B-Unique Records' James Sandom became their new manager, and they soon signed a recording deal.
