Hopsin Life

Marcus Jamal Hopson (born July 18, 1985), also known as Hopsin, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, music video director, and actor from Los Angeles, California. He was signed to Ruthless Records in 2007 and had founded Funk Volume, his own record store.

In 2016, he would move on to form Undercover Prodigy, his first record label.

Hopsin has released five studio albums, Gazing at the Moonlight through Ruthless Records, Raw, Knock Madness, and Pound Syndrome, as well as the collaborative project Haywire with SwizZz through Funk Volume and No Shame.

He is well-known for his use of white colored eye contacts in music videos, performances, and interviews.

Early life

Marcus Hopson was born in Los Angeles on July 18, 1985, and was raised in the largely Hispanic Panorama City neighborhood. He attended James Monroe High School, where he was enrolled in special education classes. Hopsin has been a skateboarder since the age of 12, and many of his music videos feature him skateboarding. He began rapping at the age of sixteen years old and took his interest seriously in 2003, the year when the bulk of Hopsin's self-produced album Emurge were released. Hopsin and a group of friends were arrested in 2004 for vandalizing the James Monroe High School property. It was supposed to be a school prank, but they were arrested and detained on $20,000 bail later. Hopsin, who had dropped out earlier this year, was taken to Los Angeles County Jail, where he spent eight days. Upon his release, he embarked on a life in music, bought a microphone, and installed FL Studio (known as FruityLoops at the time) on his computer. Eminem is the rapper who first made him interested in hip hop music, according to him.

Hopsin Career

Music career

Hopsin's debut project Emurge was released in 2002 and was eventually released locally in 2003, but to this day, the album has never been released officially. Hopsin first signed with Ruthless Records in 2007 and even began recording his debut album in 2004. He was originally praised as one of the driving factors behind the attempts to restore Ruthless Records to their former glory. On May 27, 2008, Hopsin's lead single from his debut album "Pans in the Kitchen" was released. Hopsin's album was expected to be self-produced and have no affiliations with other artists. However, Gazing at the Moonlight, his debut album, was not released until October 27, 2009, with no advertising. Hopsin demanded to be released from Ruthless Records due to a lack of financial compensation, artist help, and promotion just a few weeks after the album's debut. Hopsin formed Funk Volume, a new independent label that debuted shortly before Ruthless Records' departure, alongside Damien Ritter. SwizZz, Damien Ritter's younger brother and a former Hopsin High classmate, was the first artist to be signed to Funk Volume. Hopsin and SwizZz produced a joint mixtape named Haywire in June 2009 to advertise the brand just short of launching Funk Volume. Funk Volume had intended to sell it for retail use but was unable to do so due to Hopsin's constant employment with Ruthless Records at the time. It has been rated Gold on mixtape's website, DatPiff, for downloading over 100,000 times, and later became available for purchase via iTunes and Amazon.com.

On August 1, 2010, Hopsin unveiled "Nocturnal Rainbows" as the first single off his forthcoming second album Raw's forthcoming second album Raw. Raw, Hopsin's second album, was released on November 19, 2010. Hopsin spent two months in March 2011 on the I Am RAW tour, going all around the country to promote Raw.
