Kane Brett Robinson, born 21 May 1985, better known as Kano, is a British MC, singer, songwriter, and actor from East Ham, London.

Kano is widely respected as one of the pioneers of grime music and culture, alongside artists such as Skepta, Wiley, and Dizzee Rascal.

Kano's debut single "P's and Q's," which was an underground hit in the grime crowd in 2004. Kano's London Town (2007) starred Craig David on his highest-charting single "This is the Girl."

Kano's fifth album Made in the Manor (2016), Kano's most commercial album to date, after signing to Parlophone (a record label his cousin Dillon Smith is a member of) and six years without a studio announcement.

Music critics and charted it at number eight in the UK Albums Chart, establishing Kano's highest-charting debut, as well as being named as one of the best albums of 2016 by various publications.

It was shortlisted for the 2016 Mercury Prize and was named Best Album at the 2016 MOBO Awards. He is also known for his acting, most notably in Top Boy's role of Sully.

Kano, along with 34 other musicians, signed a letter in November 2019 supporting Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and a call to end austerity in the UK general election. In December 2019, alongside 42 other influential cultural figures, he signed a letter endorsing the Labour Party under Corbyn's leadership. "Labour's election manifesto under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership delivers a transformative agenda that prioritizes people and the planet over personal gain and the vested interests of a few," the letter said.

Music career

Kano's parents were born in Jamaica, and he attended Langdon Secondary School. Robinson, a promising footballer, played Chelsea, West Ham United Norwich City, and Celtic by the age of 13, but by the time, he had canceled his sporting ambitions in favour of a musical career.

He joined the N.A.T.Y., based in East London. Members (Natural Artistic Sounds Touching You), whose original line-up included Kano, Marcus Nasty, Jammer, D Double E, Ghetts, Demon, Stormin, Monkstar, Sharky Major, Armour, and Hyper, is a film by Nathan Kano. The N.A.T.Y crew had a popular show on pirate radio station Deja Vu, airing Monday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., including Dizzee Rascal, Durrty Goodz, Wiley, and others.

Kano left N.A.T.Y. because the crew's underground fame as a springboard. "Boys Love Girls," his first solo album, was released in 2002 but later turned to a recording and remastered by Dizzee Rascal. He then appeared as a solo artist and began to work on his debut solo album, Home Sweet Home.

Kano was approached by Hugo Boss in 2004 to model for their Spring/Summer series, but he was unable to begin recording and touring commitments. Kano's debut solo single "P's & Q's" came on a 12" vinyl-only record, putting him out as a rising star on the underground, only a few weeks later.

Kano's second single, "Typical Me," was his first full single release from Dirty Rag and starring Ghetts in 2005. "Typical Me" reached No. 1. In the UK Singles Charts, at number 22. Andy Hylton produced "Typical Me" on YouTube. "Remember Me," the third single, debuted in the charts, earning No. 2nd place. 71 years old. Kano's debut album Home Sweet Home was released two weeks later, on June 27, 2005. It was the first new entry in his debut this week, debuting inside the UK top 40 at No. 40. 36. The fourth single "Nite Nite" was released in September 2005, starring Leo the Lion and The Streets. "Nite Nite" debuted at No. 1 on No. 5. In the United Kingdom charts, the top 75 have spent six weeks in total, with 25 on the top 25.

Shortly after the introduction of "Nite Nite," a promotional video for "Reload It" that featured live performance clips and backstage footage, Channel U was sent by a UK video station to promote the album further. Kano also released a stripped down version of album track "Nobody Don't Dance No More" starring Katie Pearl in December 2005 as a download-only single. On CD: 2 of "Nite Nite," the album was also listed as a B-side. Kano's fifth and final single from the album, a double A-side of "Brown Eyes" and "Signs in Life," were released on March 13, 2006. The single was only available on a vinyl format and included a free sticker, which made it ineligible for chart inclusion.

In the United Kingdom, Home Sweet Home gained Gold status. The album was well reviewed in the British press, particularly in The Independent and The Observer, two of the UK's most popular newspapers.

Kano's music appeared on Run the Road, a 2005 compilation of 16 grime tracks. Other grime artists, such as Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, and Lady Sovereign, were included in the collection. Kano did a verse on "Destruction VIP" and appeared on three other tracks, including "P's and Q's."

Kano appeared on MTV2's Spanking New Music with JME, N-Dubz, and Unklejam on March 23, 2006. "London Town," "P's & Q's," "Brown Eyes," "Me & My Mic," and Beats & Bars mixtape songs were among his highlights. Kano revealed on the show that his next album would be called London Town.

Kano released a mixtape (simply called Mixtape on the front page) for marketing before London Town was announced. This collection featured new music including "I Write Bars Till The Milkman Comes," the film Layer Cake's "Layer Cake"), and Kano's own interpretations of hip-hop songs, as well as "Public Service Announcement," Nas' "Black Republican" and Kanye West's "My Way Home." A preview of "Buss It Up," a song that appeared on the later release of London Town, was also included on the mixtape.

The first time, London Town, was released on September 10, 2007, was followed by Craig David' single "This Is The Girl" on August 27. The album includes collaborations with Blur and Gorillaz front-man Damon Albarn, Kate Nash, and Vybz Kartel, alongside Craig David.

Kano toured the United Kingdom after the album's debut, as well as performing the whole album at the Jazz Cafe in October 2007. Kano also sold out London Astoria in the same month to put on an entertaining display promoting Tinchy Stryder on tour.

Kano no longer signed to 679 Recordings in 2008 as he wanted to return to his "grimier roots" and had showcased all new freestyles on his Myspace page. He dropped MC No. MC No. on the streets in April, shortly after. Fans before his third album 140 Grime Street appeared on the shelves. "More Than One Way" was the premiere on Mista Jam's 1xtra radio show "More Than One Way." On Kano's official YouTube page, the video was also posted. The track was developed for a campaign to raise the Diploma, and it was offered exclusively from The Diploma website. Diploma students from around the world contributed to the music video. Kano is seen on television ads walking through a crowd of students whose Diploma degrees appear above them. Students were given assignments to assist with the video that related to the course that they were taking. Creative and media students were involved in the production of the film, while construction students assisted with the set. In an interview with the Sunday Times, Kano said he wanted to "inspire people but not in a way that glorifies patronizing and preaching."

Method to the Maadness, Kano's fourth album, was released on August 30th and charted at number 45 on the UK Albums Chart, marking the rapper's fourth straight album to appear in the Top 50. On August 23, 2010, Michelle Breeze, the lead singer, was released, "Upside" (featuring Michelle Breeze).

Kano appears on the third Gorillaz studio album, Plastic Beach. On the track "White Flag," he collaborates with fellow British rapper Bashy and the National Orchestra for Arabic Music. Kano was interviewed by The Guardian for the first time about how he loved being with Bashy and that Damon Albarn and himself were both on the same page musically.

Kano revealed a four-track collaborative EP with producer Mikey J. Kano did not want something to stand in his way when it came to making the music, and the EP was titled Not for the A List. Parts of the EP was to make one track a week and then get it to a DJ to play on radio, ensuring it was a different DJ each week throughout a four-week period. The first track on the second track, "Alien," featured Maxsta, the first label signing by SBTV founder Jamal Edwards. The third week featured Wiley, Scorcher, and Wretch 32. Due to the length of 7 and a half minutes, the fourth track, "House of Pain," starring Ghetts, was postponed. In order to perform it, the DJ had to get permission from his boss. Kano is said to be using the EP to raise hopes for his fifth studio album, which will be released in 2012.

Kano revealed on Twitter on November 13 that he would unveil Girls Over Guns, a mixtape that would appeal more to women than to men, according to Kano.

As the follow-up mixtape to the 2010 edition, Kano released Jack Bauer 2.4 on January 1, 2012.

Kano unveiled a music video starring JME on "Flow of the Year" on April 26, 2014, which was broadcast on SB.TV. "Hail" was released in March 2015, and the B-side "New Banger" was announced via Noisey in April 2015.

Made in the Manor (2016) by Kano's fifth album Made in the Manor (2016) features all the aforementioned songs as well as his popular 2015 freestyle "Garage Skank." Wiley and Giggs were the first to launch the album with the single "3 Wheel Ups." The song premiered on MistaJam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on January 7, 2016. The album debuted at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming Kano's highest-charting album since London Town (2007).

Following its announcement earlier this month, Kano's sixth studio album Hoodies All Summer was released on August 30, 2019.

The album will be shortlisted for the Mercury Prize 2020, the second time in Kano's career.

Kano performed on stage again in 2020 for his seventh Gorillaz studio album "Song Machine," as well as Spanish singer Roxani Arias for the song "Dead Butterflies."

Kano worked with Fraser T. Smith on Smith's debut album "12 Questions" in October 2020.
