Hella Wuolijoki (née Ella Marie Murrik; 22 July 1886 – February 2, 1954), also known by the pen name Juhani Tervapää, was an Estonian-born Finnish writer best known for her Niskavuori collection.
Early life
Wuolijoki was born in Ala, a hamlet in Helme Parish (now in Trva Parish), Valga County, Governorate of Livonia. She began her studies in Tartu before heading to Helsinki in 1904. Sulo Vuolijoki, a Lenin personal friend, married her in 1908. They divorced in 1923. Wuolijoki began spelling her name with a W later in life.
Personal life
Salme Dutt, her younger sister, was a leading figure in the Communist Party of Great Britain. Wuolijoki was the grandmother of Erkki Tuomioja (b.1946), Finland's foreign affairs minister from 2011 to 2015.
Career
Wuolijoki wrote several books under the male pseudonym Juhani Tervapää that were characterized by strong female characters. The Farmer's Daughter, a 1947 film, was based on her 1937 play Juurakon Hulda, which she also wrote as Juhani Tervapää. On the first version of his Mr Puntila and his Man Matti, she collaborated with Bertolt Brecht.
Wuolijoki held a literary and political salon in the 1920s and 1930s that explored culture and promoted left-wing thinking. She had shadowed links with the Soviet intelligence and security service. The Finnish police suspected her of being an illegal resident spy, but there was no clear evidence until 1943, when she was arrested for concealing Kerttu Nuorteva, a Soviet paratrooper spy on a trip to gather information about the political climate and the German troops in Finland, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. She was released in 1944 after the war ended in Continuation.
