Biography and career

Baturin was born in Arumetsa village, Suislepa Parish, (now Maltsa village, Tarvastu Parish), Viljandi County. His father was a fisherman. For five years he was a hunter in the Siberian taiga after attending high school and military service; the Atlantic Ocean took him for five years. He was involved in numerous geological expeditions for six years.

In the last wave of the "cassette" generation in the 1960s, Baturin unveiled a series of poetry, Maa-alused järved (Underground Lakes, 1968), Maa-alused järved (Underground Lakes, 1968). He has written drama, poetry, screenplays, and essays, in addition to fiction. He has illustrated his own books and produced his own plays. His works have been translated into Russian, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian. In 1973, he became a member of the Estonian Writers' Union.

Baturin lived on his farm by Lake Vrtsjärv.
