Hannah Jane Arterton (born 26 January 1989) is an English actor.

She was born in Gravesend, Kent.

Arterton studied at Gravesend Grammar School for Girls and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2011.

She has appeared in the television series The Five (2005) and Safe (2018), as well as the film Walking on Sunshine (2014).

Early life

Arterton was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, on January 26, 1989. Sally-Anne (née Heap) is a domestic cleaner and runs a cleaning company, while her father Barry J. Arterton is a metal worker welder. Her parents divorced during her early childhood with Arterton, her older sister Gemma Arterton, and her mother in a council estate. After attending a preview of The Wizard of Oz performed by The Miskin Theatre in Dartford, she claims she was drawn to acting at the age of seven. "I'd never seen anything like it," Arterton said. I was utterly blown away... A whole new world had just opened up." Her matrilineal grandmother, she was a German-Jewish concert violinist.

She began her early education at the Gravesend Grammar School for Girls. She then studied Performance and Music Technology at North Kent College's Miskin Theatre. She sang of a skiffle band while studying there and created a record deal that later fell apart. "Argh, I can't do this," she described the situation: "I can't do this." People in the music industry are too dependent on them. It's packed with sharks and guys who are attached to a young artist and trying to make money. It's all scary." A Miskin Theatre lecturer compelled her to enroll in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), which she later attended in 2011. She was first introduced by Stephen Poliakoff in his role My City during her last year at RADA. Arterton formed The Hitmen and Her, a seven-piece covers band, while RADA, for which she is the lead singer.

Arterton was then cast as Korinna in the BBC television series Atlantis (2013) after appearing in the film My City (2011) with Tracey Ullman and Tom Riley at the Almeida Theatre.

In the romantic comedy Walking on Sunshine (2014), she appeared as a woman trapped in a love triangle. Critics generally applauded her work. She starred in Hide and Seek (2014), a romantic drama about a polyamorous commune that received the Edinburgh International Film Festival's Best British Feature Film award.

In 2016, she appeared as a detective in Harlan Coben's American crime novel The Five. Arterton reunited with Coben to play detective Emma Castle in Netflix's original series Safe. She appeared in two horror films directed by Paul Hyett, The Convent, and Peripheral in the same year.
