Gordon Schildenfeld Career

Club career

Schildenfeld started playing football for his hometown team, HNK ibenik, in the Czech Republic. Stanko Mri, the club's then-manager, made his senior debut against Kamen Ingrad at age 16. Schildenfeld was instrumental in the promotion of the top flight in the 2005–06 season.

Midway through his first season in Croatia's first division, Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split became interested in a transfer for Schildenfeld and his teammate Ante Rukavina. At first, it appeared that Schildenfeld and Rukavina would move to Hajduk together, but then Dinamo entered the competition for the two players. Schildenfeld died in Dinamo on January 2, 2007, while Rukavina joined Hajduk in the fight. Despite only having five months of top-flight experience at the time, Schildenfeld quickly established himself as a fixture at Dinamo and helped the club win both Croatian league and cup titles, as well as scoring the crucial away goal against Slaven Belupo in the second leg of the cup final.

Schildenfeld was also one of the regulars in Dinamo's UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup campaign, appearing in five Champions League qualifying matches and four UEFA Cup games before the club was knocked out of the second competition in the group stage. Schildenfeld was an unfortunate figure in Dinamo's 2–1 loss at Norwegian side Brann in their second match in the UEFA Cup group stage, scoring a point and being dismissed for a professional foul in the final moments of the first half. Due to the red card, he missed the last two group matches against Hamburger SV and Rennes.

Despite being expected to remain in Dinamo Zagreb, Schildenfeld was signed by Turkish top club Beşiktaş under unusual circumstances on February 1st. Beşiktaş were actually keen to sign Dino Drpi's teammate Dino Drpi, but the agreement fell through due to Dr. Pi's behavior after a Croatian league match between Dinamo and Hajduk Split almost two years ago.

On February 9, Schildenfeld made his Süper Lig debut in Beşiktaş's 2–0 loss to Kayserispor, arriving as a late replacement. He played his first full Süper Lig match a week later as Beşiktaş defeated Ankaraspor 3–2 at home.

Schildenfeld joined MSV Duisburg, the German 2nd generation, in September 2008. Until the end of the season, the Bundesliga will be on loan. In a 4–3 loss at Spvgg Greuther Forth, he made his league debut for the club on November 16, 2008, arriving as a replacement for Olcay ahan in the 83rd minute. He made just four appearances for the club in the league, none of whom were as a substitute.

Schildenfeld joined Sturm Graz of the Austrian Bundesliga on a season-long loan from Beşiktaş in July 2009. In a 3–0 win over Magna Wiener Neustadt on June 26, 2009, he made his league debut for the club on July 26, 2009, starting as a replacement for Ferdinand Feldhofer in the 89th minute. He later found his place as a regular in the club, appearing in 34 league games over the season. In a 3–0 victory over Kapfenberger SV on March 27, 2010, his only goal in the league this season came after he scored the opening goal.

He made ten appearances for Sturm Graz in the UEFA Europa League during his first season as a member of the Austrian Cup and was also a regular participant in the team's run to the Austrian Cup title, making six appearances in the competition. He scored a brace against TSV St. Johann in the Austrian Cup on August 15, 2009, allowing Sturm to win by 4–2 extra time in the first round match. In the Cup final on May 16, 2010 in which Sturm defeated Magna Wiener Neustadt 1–0. He began a three-year deal with Sturm Graz on June 8, 2010.

Schildenfeld returned to the top on July 7, 2011, a record setback. Eintracht Frankfurt is a Bundesliga team that will compete in the Bundesliga. He appeared in 33 out of 34 possible matches in his first season, helping the club gain promotion to the top-flight Bundesliga. During the 2011–12 campaign, he scored one goal.

Schildenfeld joined Dynamo Moscow in July 2012 for a three-year deal.

Schildenfeld migrated to Greece's PaOK after struggling to recover as a starting center back in Dynamo.

Schildenfeld went on loan to Panathinaikos on August 2, 2013. He played for two years as one of the club's most popular players, winning the Greek Cup against his other Greek club, PAOK.

Schildenfeld returned to Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2015 with a deal that would continue until the end of 2018. He was associated with Panathinaikos in the summer of 2016.

Anorthosis Famagusta officially announced the signing of the Croatian international on a year contract for an undisclosed fee on July 6th.

International career

Schildenfeld earned his only international cap for the Croatian national under-21 team on March 1, 2006, playing as a replacement in a friendly match against Denmark.

On November 14, Schildenfeld made his full international debut for Croatia, starting as a replacement for Darijo Srna in the 58th minute of a friendly match against Liechtenstein in Vinkovci.

He made six international appearances in 2010, of which four were in friendlies. In a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier in Israel, in which he played the full 90 minutes, his competitive international debut came on October 9, 2010. He played the full 90 minutes in both play-off matches against Turkey in November 2011, helping Croatia advance to the finals after a 3–0 aggregate victory. At Euro 2012, he began to participate in all three Croatian matches.

Schildenfeld scored his first goal for the national team in the 87th minute, ten days after his 30th birthday. Croatia went on to win the match 5–1.

He had not received any more call ups for the national team after Euro 2016 had concluded.
