Tottenham Hotspur agreed to a deal that starts on July 1, 2005, after turning down a £2 million bid in January. Despite being out of work, his age ensured that he did not leave on a Bosman transfer, and the two clubs have agreed a £1.5 million compensation.

Routledge was the subject of a scathing verbal attack by Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan on July 10, 2008. Jordan was speaking with John Bostock, the former midfielder of Portsmouth, during which he used Routledge as an example of why he felt the youth player should not leave Palace to join Tottenham Hotspur. Routledge said Routledge "grabbed the money" of a Tottenham move before discovering his trade at Palace, but he did not qualify as a first-teamer at any of his previous clubs.
Routledge was allowed to join Cardiff City on a two-month loan contract in November 2008 after struggling with a double injury blow when both Joe Ledley and Peter Whittingham were out for one and three months respectively. He continued playing in the Premier League from August 2010 after winning the Championship with Chris Hughton's Newcastle team.

In a 2–1 victory over Coventry at Loftus Road, he made his debut two days later and scored on his first two days. Routledge scored the goal on April 25 to almost seal QPR's place in the Premier League against Hull City. Newcastle United had terminated his deal with mutual consent, allowing him to move to QPR permanently, but Newcastle denied this.

Routledge renewed his one-year contract on August 7, 2020.
Routledge's release from the club on August 30th, 2021, Routledge's resignation was announced with the player still recovering from a knee injury sustained in the play-off semi finals from last season, who refused to commit to a new player. In October, he retired from professional football.
