She left her career in 2004 to assist D'Souza in her future. Neil D'Souza, her father, is a senior official with Tata Consultancy Services. Nigel D'Souza, a younger sister who works with the Bombay Stock Exchange, also has a younger brother, who works with the Bombay Stock Exchange. According to D'Souza, her name means "rare" or "unique" and it is a portmanteau of Jeanette and Neil, her mother and father's names. Geenu is also known as her name informally. D'Souza earned her bachelor's degree in Management Studies at the Apostolic Carmel High School in Bandra later joined St. Andrew's College in Bandra. She earned her degree while shooting for her first film, Tujhe Meri Kasam, in 2003, and had hoped that an MNC career would suit her. D'Souza started modeling at the age of 15, leading to her being spotted as the bridesmaid at a wedding. She was selected for Amitabh Bachchan's Parker Pen commercial just two days before her exams, and she would have to shoot the next day. Initially she refused due to her exam the next day, but the producer persuaded D'Souza to shoot for the commercial. "She was fine, and her expressions were spontaneous," Amitabh Bachchan's Parker Pen commercial attracted a lot of attention. Genelia D'Souza Career

Acting career

D'Souza was initially offered a role in Tujhe Meri Kasam, but she turned it down as she did not want to pursue a career in acting. However, the crew fought and continued to contact her for two months, and she confessed when she saw the Telugu version of the film. S. Shankar, a Tamil film producer, was captivated by her appearance in the Parker Pen commercial and wanted to portray her in a leading role in his 2003 Tamil film Boys. D'Souza was chosen out of a crowd of 300 girls who had registered for the film. Tujhe Meri Kasam (Hindi), Boys (Tamil), and Satyam (Telugu) were all in three languages at the time, and she was in three different languages simultaneously, according to her.

D'Souza's career began in 2003 with her Hindi film debut Tujhe Meri Kasam. "D'Souza is a fantastic performer," film critic Taran Adarsh said. You'll be left wondering with a result that's "natural to the core." The film was a huge hit in the box office. However, it did not do much to advance her career in Hindi cinema. She decided to work in South Indian films later on. Harini in Boys, a tale about five teenagers having stereotypical teenage fantasies, was published in Tamila this year. Despite being praised for its vulgar sexual content, the film was a box-office hit, and then she began receiving Telugu film offers. She left Tamil cinema for a while to concentrate on the Telugu film industry. In Satyam, she made her Telugu debut in 2003 as a medical student. "Genelia is a big asset," Sify wrote in their review, "Genelia is a natural performer" as her body language is her greatest strength." The film was well received, and it raised her name in the Telugu film industry.

In 2004, D'Souza appeared in Masti, her second Hindi film. The comedy is based on three close friends who reunite after three years but are now married and being threatened by their spouses. D'Souza portrayed the image of one of the wives. Taran Adarsh was supportive of D'Souza's role, saying, "Genelia is the greatest among the wives," Genelia is the most popular woman [...] Genelia is the stern and demanding wife and is sure to be noticed." The film was a box-office hit. She appeared in two Telugu movies Samba and Sye, both succeeding at the box-office in the same year.

She appeared in Naa Alludu's first Telugu film in 2005, she starred in Sachein, the Tamil romantic entertainer. "Genelia, who had no presence in Boys, has hardly made a mark in Sachein," a Hindu reviewer wrote. Audiences were divided on the film, but it was well received by the younger generation. She appeared in Subhash Chandra Bose, a Telugu patriotic film.

The year 2006 marked a turning point in D'Souza's career. In early 2006, she appeared in two Telugu films, one of which was Happy is the romantic comedy, the other was Raam. In the 2006 Telugu romantic film Bommarillu, she played Haasini, a vivacious, effervescent, and a happy-goal teenage girl. The film, which was also named in the Golden Nandi award in 2006, earned the 250 million (US$3.1 million) in India and also won the 2006 Golden Nandi award. Her character was well-reced, and she received the Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress, as well as the Nandi Special Jury Award and Santosham Award for Best Actress. "Genelia is the scene stealer of this scene," Sify said of her behavior in their investigation, with her innocent looks and charming demeanors. She does not overact; we simply fall in love with her character. Genelia wears chic skirts and is the life of the soirée, as well as raising the bar of the film.

D'Souza played the daughter of a local don's in the Tamil film Chennai Kadhal alongside Boys co-star Bharath. "Genelia stands up yet again to make the point that if you are pretty and well dressed, you can get away with everything without acting," Rediff.com said. In the blockbuster Telugu film Dhee, set against a gang war backdrop, D'Souza played the sister of a notorious gangster shortly after.

D'Souza appeared in Mr. Medhavi's 2008 Telugu romantic drama in which she played a Canadian student. "Genelia is her effervescent self," the film said, with Rediff.com congratulating her appearance, "Genelia is her effervescent self – full of joie-de-vivre and lights up the screen." In Love in Satya, she made her Kannada debut in the same year. She appeared in Santosh Subramaniam, a Tamil version of Bommarillu, later in life. The film was also very popular as its predecessor. Genelia's role as "the heart of the film" and the film's "heartest strength" was described by Sify, but Rediff.com said her character "appears to be too young to be true."

Mere Baap Pehle Aap Pehle Aap, which failed to generate revenue at the box-office in June 2008, following a nearly five-year absence in Hindi cinema. "British, rather than her apparent cuteness, contributes to the youthful characters she chooses to play," a Rediff review noted, "Genelia is sprightly but has a standard two-three expressions bank in this film." She appeared in the Telugu love story Ready alongside Ram, which was well-reced. Aditi Mahant's role in the blockbuster Jaane Tu... was her breakthrough performance in 2008. Ya Jaane Na, a national and international success, is grossing 544 million (US$7.1 million). Her role was widely praised for her sweetness and freshness, as well as a new style of acting, with Rediff describing her performance as a "spark that has been missing in Hindi cinema for well over a decade now." D'Souza appeared in the Telugu romantic comedy Sasirekha Parinayam the previous year. The film received rave reviews, and Sify said in their review, "Genelia is definitely Genelia, and she has demonstrated the varying emotions from innocence, sadness, love, and indignation without a hitch."

D'Souza was cast in the Hindi film Life Partner in 2009, in which she was chastised for her role. "The cute little imp from Jaane Na's film has turned into a nagging harridan, and it would have been a shame to enroll in acting lessons," India film critic Rajeev Masand said. She appeared in Katha, which was well-received, and for which she received the 2009 Nandi Special Jury Award. D'Souza appeared in Chance Pe Dance and Orange in 2010, gaining poor feedback from critics, but her Uthama Puthiran was a modest success in Tamil.

In her debut Malayalam film Urumi, D'Souza played a major role in 2011. The film is about a boy who plans to murder Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama in Calicut, Kerala, during the 15th century. She learned horse riding and spent two weeks of preparation to use the sword, the short stick, and the movements of the Dravidian martial art Kalarippayattu. The film changed her image makeover from common girl-next-door roles to more serious roles. She was next seen in the Hindi action thriller Force, which received mixed feedback from commentators, with Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama noting that D'Souza is strikingly sweet and subdued. She appeared as a journalist in Velayudham, which was also a commercially lucrative venture. She appeared in Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya and Naa Ishtam in 2012 and in cameo appearances in Jai Ho and Lai Bhaari in 2014. In 2016, she appeared in Maya in Force 2 as a cameo.

Genelia became a producer for her husband's Marathi film Mauli, in which she also appeared in a film.

Genelia will make her return to full time acting after ten years with her Marathi film debut, Vedd, directed by Riteish Deshmukh. After ten years in Telugu-Kannada bilingual film Production No. 15, she will also appear in Bhushan Kumar's Mummy.
