Early life
McFadden was born in Akron, Ohio. She studied at Brandeis University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) in the theatre arts before heading to Paris, where she studied with actor Jacques Lecoq at his Paris school of physical theatre. McFadden is of Lithuanian descent on her mother's side.

Career
McFadden served at The Jim Henson Company as the head of choreography and puppetry for Labyrinth, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and Uncredited work on Dreamchild. She is often described as "Gates McFadden" as an actor and "Cheryl McFadden" as a choreographer as a way of distinguishing her acting work from her choreography. In the Troma film "Cheryl McFadden" (1985), she was also listed as "Cheryl McFadden" on the Troma film When Nature Calls (1985) and "Cliff's 50th Birthday" in the series-three episode of The Cosby Show, "Cliff's 50th Birthday." In 1987, McFadden was cast as Dr. Beverly Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Captain Jean-Luc Picard's love interest was supposed to be his love interest; another significant part of the character was being a widow balancing motherhood and a career. Maurice Hurley, a writer and showrunner, didn't like working with McFadden, and at Hurley's request, she was let go at the end of season one. Dr. Katherine Pulaski, Enterprise's new chief medical officer, joined the crew for the second season.
Gene Roddenberry, the series's creator, admitted that the Dr. Pulaski character did not have chemistry with the other characters, so McFadden was tempted to return as Dr. Crusher for the third season. She was tentative at first, but McFadden was encouraged to return to the role after a phone call from co-star Patrick Stewart and several fan letters.
"The High Ground" where she is kidnapped by terrorists; "Remember Me" in which she becomes trapped in an alternate reality in which her loved ones begin to vanish; and "Attached" where Picard and Crusher become telepathically linked as prisoners and discover their true feelings for one another.

In addition, McFadden directed the episode "Genesis" (her first directing credit) in which an infection leads the crew to devolve into primitive modes of life and choreographed the dance routine in "Data's Day."
McFadden appeared in James Belushi's 1990 comedy Taking Care of Business, as well as fellow Next Generation alumnus John de Lancie (Q). She appeared alongside Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and Colm Meaney in a production of Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, which was staged in four towns in 1992.
