Vicki Lawrence Career

Career

Lawrence, a comedian and actress, is best known for her appearance on The Carol Burnett Exhibition, of which she appeared on television from 1967 to 1978. Except for Burnett herself, she was the only cast member of the show for the entire 11 seasons. Lawrence and her children went to Maui, Hawaii, but they have returned to Los Angeles, where they have remained, after The Carol Burnett Show ended in 1978.

Her portrayal of the Mama character on The Carol Burnett Show's "The Family" sketches was so popular that NBC later developed the sitcom Mama's Family, elaborating on the Mama character. (Burnett reprised Eunice Higgins' appearance on the sitcom from time to time.) On NBC, the series ran from 1983 to 1985; after its demise from NBC, it was revived from 1986 to 1990 in first-run syndication. In the latest version, the show was more popular. On stage for Vicki Lawrence & Mama: A Two-Woman Show, she also reprised the Mama character.

Lawrence has appeared on other television shows, including those of Laverne & Shirley, Major Dad, Roseanne, Hannah Montana, and Yes, Dear. Lawrence appeared in Anything for Love, which aired on CBS as a special on CBS in 1985 and co-starred Lauren Tewes and Rebeca Arthur. Lawrence has appeared in Burnett, Korman, and Tim Conway's Burnett show retrospectives that were broadcast in 1993, 2001, and 2004. In the TV special based on Nunsense Jamboree that first aired on TNN in 1998, Lawrence played Sister Mary Paul (Sister Amnesia).

In the hit Disney series Hannah Montana starring Billy Ray Cyrus and his daughter Miley Cyrus, Lawrence played Mamaw Stewart (the mother of Robby Ray Stewart and grandmother of Jackson and Miley Stewart).

Lawrence portrayed Mama in an Ohio commercial, campaigning for a constitutional amendment that would authorize casino gaming in Ohio. In an episode of Roseanne, Lawrence played Dan's old high-school flame, Phyllis. She appeared in a special celebrity-edition episode of The Weakest Link starring Anne Robinson. She made it to the final two as a fundraiser, but she lost to Ed Begley, Jr.

Lawrence got her start as a performer on Johnny Mann's syndicated Stand Up And Cheer scheme. However, she is best known for her number one hit, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," her first husband Bobby Russell's record-breaking album "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," which was released on Bell Records in November 1972. The Recording Industry Association of America (USA) awarded a gold disc in April 1973. It has sold over two million copies and was presented with a gold disc. Lawrence received her gold record by surprise from Carol Burnett in the last episode of the sixth season of The Carol Burnett Show (March 24, 1973). The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, her first album, was released in Georgia soon after the single went gold. Reba McEntire's 1991 album For My Broken Heart re-recorded the song. McEntire first appeared on country radio in 1992 as a single, and it reached its high rank at No. 2. The country chart has a 12th spot, aided in part by a sweeping music video.

Lawrence's sequel to "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," reached number 75 in the United States and became Australia's biggest hit, peaking at number one in November 1973. "Ships in the Night" (1974), she continued it there. Lawrence did one last minor U.S. chart entry on the Private Stock label in 1975 with "The Other Woman" (number 81).

Ships in the Night, her second LP for Bell Records, Ships in the Night, was released in 1974. The brand was in the process of being phased out by Arista, and the LP was not available in the United States. The LP was, on the other hand, released in Australia, where she continued to have chart success. Real Gone Music released Lawrence's first two albums as a single CD with bonus tracks on April 1, 2014.

In 1979, she released Newborn Woman, a disco album. "Don't Stop the Music" was the album's minor disco hit.

She appeared on television shows as an emcee, as well as an unmanned pilot for Mark Goodson Productions, 1990's Body Talk, and several iterations of the Pyramid game show, where she was known for verbally sparring with host Dick Clark on several occasions. She also went missing after being unable to return during the closing credits in one episode. She appeared on the 1986-1989 version of Hollywood Squares, where she appeared both as herself and as Thelma "Mama" Harper. Lawrence was nominated a number of times for the eponymous Vicki with the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host. (1992–1994): However, the show ended after two seasons due to fierce competitions with her syndicator. In 1997, she appeared on Fox After Breakfast, which was renamed The Vicki Lawrence Show, but it was cancelled five weeks later due to poor ratings. On the 1998 revival of Match Game, she served as a regular panelist, but the series only lasted one season.

With the first half as herself and the second half as Mama, she tours the country. In an infomercial for the Big Boss Grill, she can also be seen on television. She is also known for her voice-over work on the animated film Hermie and Friends.

Lawrence was seen on the MeTV television network in 2018 promoting The Carol Burnett Show and other classic television series.
