Melody Patricia Patterson (April 16, 1949 – August 20, 2015) was an American actress known for her role as Wrangler Jane in the 1960s television series F Troop and for her appearance in the cult horror film Blood and Lace (1971).
Early life
Melody Patterson was born in Inglewood, California, on April 16, 1949. She was the daughter of machinist Pat Patterson and the former Rosemary Wilson, a Miss Universe official. Her mother was a dancer with Warner Bros. who had "doubled for Joan Crawford in several films."
She first appeared in Mrs. McThing at the Downey Community Theatre in Downey, California, at the age of four. At the age of five, Patterson wrote and directed a play. She had also worked as a photographer's model, an actor, and an ice skater before turning 10. She enrolled in the Hollywood Professional School in the ninth grade. Although she served on F Troop, she continued her education in the Warner Bros. school. She attended the Hollywood Professional School and then studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
Personal life
Patterson has been married three times. In July 1970, she married actor James MacArthur. In the television series Hawaii Five-O, MacArthur was best known for playing Danny "Danno" Williams. She put off her career to move to Honolulu, where the show was shot. In 1975, they parted. She married Robert Hill Crump Seaton, Jr., in a second marriage that ended in divorce on April 29, 1998. On November 28, 1998, she married singer Vern Miller and ended with her death. Patterson had no children from those marriages.
Career
On a lark, she appears to have auditioned for F Troop (1965). To her surprise, she was asked to read some lines from the script of the Doris Day Calamity Jane film, which she had seen several times on television and had often re-enacted while playing at home. Her reading captivated the designers who brought her role.
She was not yet 16 years old when she started her career with a forged birth certificate that indicated her age was 18 and retained her true age from the manufacturers, but not quite 16. She told them her real age when she had landed the role. Their apprehension and consternation were alleviated shortly thereafter by her maturity and professionalism. Patterson spent time in television, radio, and theater after the F Troop's cancellation in 1967. She has appeared on Mr. Novak and Shindig as well. She appeared in three episodes of Hawaii Five-O, began modeling and appearing in television commercials in the 1970s.
In Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Patterson's first screen appearance was an uncredited walk-on. She was first seen in The Angry Breed, a 1968 drama. She appeared in a leading role in Bruce Dern's action film The Cycle Savages (1971), as well as a leading role in the slasher film Blood and Lace (1971). She appeared in a small part in The Harrad Experiment (1973). Her final film role was in The Immortalizer (1990), a direct-to-video sci-fi horror film.
Patterson appeared in the film Butterflies Are Free, with Barbara Rush and Dirk Benedict while living in Hawaii. She appeared in other plays, including House of Blue Leaves for the University of Hawaii, and appeared in Peggy in Charles MacArthur's The Front Page, directed by her then-husband James MacArthur (Charles' son).
She earned her bachelor's degree from Sierra Nevada College in 1999.
