Ferran Torres Garca (born 29 February 2000) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for La Liga club Barcelona and the Spain national team.

Torres began his career at Valencia, where he made his senior debut in 2017. In the 2020-21 season, he moved to Manchester City and lifted the Premier League and the EFL Cup. In January 2022, he departed for Barcelona. He has competed for Spain at various youth levels and made his senior debut in 2020.

Club career

Torres, a native of Foios, Valencian province, joined Valencia's youth group in 2006 at the age of six. While still a freshman, he made his senior debut with the reserve team on October 15 by appearing as a backup for Grego in a 2–0 Segunda División B home loss to Mallorca B.

Torres was promoted to the B-side ahead of his 2017-18 debut, and he scored his first senior goal against Perpeta-Girona B. He renewed his deal on October 5th, after being strongly linked to Barcelona and Real Madrid, which also extended his release term to €25 million. On January 1, 2018, he was also promoted to the first team.

Torres made his first team debut on November 30, 2017, defeating fellow youth graduate Nacho Gil in a 4–1 home routing of Real Zaragoza for the season's Copa del Rey. He made his La Liga debut on December 16th in a 1–2 loss at Eibar, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to play in the league. Torres made his European and Champions League debut on October 23, 2018, defeating Young Boys 1-1 in a 1–1 draw. He scored his first La Liga goal on January 19, 2019, ten minutes after starting as a replacement in a 2–1 victory over Celta Vigo. Valencia defeated Barcelona 2–1 in the 2019 Copa del Rey Final at the Estadio Benito Villamarn in Seville, on May 25th, he stayed on the bench.

Torres scored his first Champions League goal on November 5, netting his team's last goal in a 4–1 home victory over Lille, becoming Valencia's youngest goalscorer in the competition. Torres defeated Real Betis 2–1 away on November 23rd, becoming the youngest Los Ches player to play 50 league games at the age of 19 years and 254 days.

Manchester City, an English club, reported Torres' five-year deal, until 2025, for a reported transfer fee of €23 million (£20.8 million). Torres inherited the shirt number 21 worn by club legend David Silva, a fellow Spanish player who came from Valencia, later announced that the club had inherited it. Torres made his debut in City's first game of the season by playing as a replacement in a 3–1 away victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. Torres scored his first goal for the club in a 3–0 away victory over Burnley in the EFL Cup on September 30th.

In a 3–1 victory over Porto on October 21, he made his Champions League debut with Manchester City, scoring a goal. Torres began and scored in the Champions League a week later, defeating Olympique de Marseille 0–3 for the youngest Spanish player to score in three consecutive appearances in the tournament. Torres scored his first league goal for City in a 5–0 home win over Burnley on November 28th. Torres scored his first hat-trick for City on May 14 in a 4-3 away league victory over Newcastle United.

Torres agreed a €55 million (more conditional add-ons worth €10 million) in December 2021, largely due to injuries, and the following month will be completed by Barça selling players from their squad.

Torres had completed a permanent transfer to Barcelona on December 28, 2021, with a buyout provision of €1 billion. Torres scored his first goal for Barcelona in a 3–2 loss to Athletic Bilbao at the end of extra time in the Copa del Rey round of 16. In his first El Clásico game, he scored a goal and supported Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, helping Barcelona beat the league leaders 4–0 away from defeating Barcelona on 20 March 2022.

International career

Torres was a member of Spain's 2017 FIFA Under-17 Championship final over England, and he was also a member of the squad that qualified for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup final, losing out to the same opponent. He was chosen in Spain's squad for the 2019 European Under-19 Championship in Armenia. In the semi-final victory over France, he scored the winning penalty, and the two goals of the 2–0 victory over Portugal against reigning champions Portugal were met in Yerevan. In a 1–0 away victory over Kazakhstan in a European Championship qualifier, he made his Spain U21 debut on September 6, 2019.

Torres was called up to the senior Spain national team for the first time just 16 days after signing for Manchester City. On September 3, 2020, he made his UEFA Nations League debut against Germany, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 away draw and setting up a pre-assist for Spain's last minute equalizer. In a 4–0 victory over Ukraine three days later, he scored his first senior international goal. Torres won by 6–0 over Germany on November 17, 2020, his first international hat-trick.

Torres was drafted in Luis Enrique's 24-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 on May 24th. In the 76th minute of the game against Croatia, Torres scored the third goal of the Euro 2020 final 16 in the 76th minute, resulting in a 5–3 victory on June 28th.

Torres scored both goals in Spain's 2–1 away victory over reigning European Champions Italy in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League semi-finals on October 6th. Spain lost 2–1 against France in the final four days. With two goals, he was the joint top scorer of the Nations League Finals, along with France's Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappé, with the latter winning the Top Scorer Trophy due to his assistance.
