Music career
Lemon Parade, Tonic's first release, was a multi-platinum hit song, "Open Up Your Eyes" and "If You Could Only See" (the former writer and co-writer Jeff Russo's version, the latter of which was one of the most popular rock songs of 1997). Tonic's second album and the mainstream rock hit, "You Wanted More," in 1999. Head On Straight, Tonic's third LP, was released in 2002. Tonic received two Grammy Awards in 2003 - one for best Rock Performance by Duo or Group with Vocal for "Take Me As I Am" and the second for Best Rock Album. Hart co-wrote "Almost Perfect" a 2005 Ingram Hill hit, which debuted on the Hot AC chart, at number 25.
"Generation," Hart co-wrote the theme song for the NBC drama American Dreams, which premiered in 2002. In 2003, he received an ASCAP award for his "Best Theme Song of Television."
Hart's debut solo effort, Cigarettes and Gasoline, was released in February 2007, under EMI/Manhattan Records. On July 17, 2007, it was announced. Hart's first single, "If You're Gonna Leave," debuted on American radio stations in June 2007, while his second album, "I Wish the Best for You," received airplay in December 2007.
Beauty in Disrepair, Hart's second solo album (BMG), was released on April 15, 2014. On January 7, 2014, USA Today's first single, titled "Best That I Can Give," premiered on its website. Beauty takes on a more positive tone, with a theme of picking up the pieces and moving forward rather than his 2007 debut, dealing more with tumultuous people and personal struggles.
Hart says, "My wife and I dated for about four years" beginning shortly after a divorce. "You'll be on a challenging road, because you'll have to deal with all the baggage that has come from previous relationships." That was the song I wrote when I almost blew it — but I didn't."
Hart is still touring with Tonic as of 2018.
