Hendrickson was born in New York City. Her family later moved to Northport, Long Island, where they also owned a house there. Hendrickson demonstrated an early interest in the performing arts. In a Q&A interview, she said, "Artistic people have always surrounded me," she said, quoting her actor/artist family as the inspiration for her desire to be an actress. "Their talent and passion for the arts continue to inspire me and will always inspire me." Dennis Michael Lynch, a documentary filmmaker, lives with her cousin. Hendrickson was tap dancing on tabletops at family weddings by the age of 5. As she aged, her passion for performing grew.
Hendrickson studied musical theatre at Syracuse University for two years before returning to New York. In her sophomore year, she transferred to Fordham College.
Mindy, Bianca Montgomery, Rain Wilkins, and Pine Valley High cheerleader Mindy on the daytime drama All My Children auditioned, but others were cast. Michelle Bauer Santos, a role that eventually went to actress Rebecca Budig, tried out as a Guiding Light character.

Career
In 2001, All My Children head writer Richard Culliton wanted to set up a murder plot line, he created Mary Frances Stone (known on screen as "Frankie"). Hendrickson was the part's actor. Her character was supposed to be the lesbian girlfriend of Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel) and was set to be killed in 3 months. The fact that a homosexual pairing on a soap opera was unlikely, was unexpected, but Bianca and Frankie's bonding was unprecedented. The Culliton murder storyline was unfortunate; Frankie was killed and Bianca's mother, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci), was seen standing over her corpse holding a pistol.
This sparked a lot of buzz in the soap opera world, and producers quickly thought up a way to bring the actress back to the stage. The writers created Mary Margaret Stone (better known as Maggie) in 2002 rather than rewrite Frankie's murder. Maggie was instrumental in the discovery of her sister's murder.
When it was revealed that Maggie was not gay, unlike Frankie, the storyline tension was created. This did not stop Bianca and Maggie (fondly referred to in soap circles as BAM) enthusiasts from being vocal about their love for the couple. The authors began to form a growing relationship between the two characters after several heterosexual pairings involving Maggie did not work on the show. Maggie kissed Bianca, just moments before Bianca's lover, Lena Kundera (Olga Sosnovska), stepped in.
Bianca and Maggie became one of the most in-demand couples in soap opera history. Hendrickson had a faithful lesbian fanbase following. Lesbianation.com, self-proclaimed as the nation's most influential online community for lesbians, voted her on their top ten list of Women We Love in 2006. Hendrickson was on the list again the following year.
Maggie wasn't around until 2005, but Hendrickson played it well. Maggie left Pine Valley with Bianca, traveling with her and her daughter Miranda to live in Paris. Maggie and Bianca had been lovers offscreen during Bianca's visit to Pine Valley in late 2005. Hendrickson and former castmate Eden Riegel have since relocated to Los Angeles and are exploring other acting ventures in real life. Riegel, on the other hand, did return to All My Children for a year as part of a major newspaper storyline in late 2006 to early 2007. Hendrickson returned to the United States in January 2007 for a short three-week stint. Her last airdate was February 7, 2007, when her character returned to Paris for the last time.
Hendrickson has appeared in television shows Medium, Cold Case, CSI: Miami, and an uncredited role in Criminal Minds since leaving All My Children. Katie was supposed to appear on a episode of Criminal Minds called Doubt on April 25, 2007, but the episode was cancelled due to the violence at Virginia Tech and similar topics. The episode was renamed as the Season 3 premiere instead.
Hendrickson landed on to play Chloe Mitchell, a fashionista who has caused a lot of controversy on the daytime drama The Young and the Restless in early 2008. On the August 29, 2008 episode, it was revealed that the model was actually Kate, the daughter of Katherine Chancellor's maid, Esther Valentine. Hendrickson left the program in May 2014 but made guest appearances in October 2014 and October 2015. Hendrickson will be back to The Young and the Restless in May 2016. She appeared from July 2016 to July 2017. She returned in June 2019 and has remained on the series in a recurring fashion.
Hendrickson has appeared in the web series Imaginary Bitches with Riegel. Hendrickson had appeared on General Hospital as Margaux Dawson, as Hendrickson. However, she departed the show the following year in order to return to her role on The Young and the Restless.
