Edward Joel Kowalczyk (born July 16, 1971) is an American singer, songwriter, singer, and founding member of the band Live.
He began a solo career after leaving Live in 2009.
In June and July 2010, Alive, his first album, was released worldwide.
In December 2016, Ed returned to Live to begin.
Early life
Kowalczyk was born to a Polish family. He grew up in York, Pennsylvania, and attended William Penn Senior High School in the York City School District, where he met the other three members of what would become Live. His father, a Northeastern High School teacher, was a tutor.
Career
Ed Kowalczyk, lead singer, lyricist, and main songwriter for the band Live from 2009 to 2016, then rejoined the band in December 2016. In 2009, he departed the band and the remaining three members released a statement outlining what they felt were inappropriate behavior by Kowalczyk in relation to wage and salary negotiations. The band brought Kowalczyk to court, demanding compensation and an injunction against using the term "Live." After months of rumors, Ed rejoined the band in December 2016.
Following his exit from Live, Kowalczyk recorded his first solo album, Alive, which was released in 2010. He recorded The Garden in 2012 and The Mercy in 2013. He embarked on a huge tour in 2014-16 to commemorate Throwing Copper's 20th anniversary of appearances around the United States, Europe, and Australia.
Kowalczyk has performed with musicians Stuart Davis and Glen Ballard, as well as singers Anouk, Neneh Cherry, Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, Red Wanting Blue, and Shelby Lynne. He appeared on the 2001 Tricky album Blowback's "Evolution Revolution Love." "Indie Hair" from their 1996 album No Talking, Just Head co-produced with Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth (ex-Talking Heads, then touring as The Heads).
He appeared in David Fincher's film Fight Club as a waiter who plays Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter, his only film acting credit to date.
