John Britt Daniel (born April 14, 1971) is the co-founder, lead singer, and guitarist of the American indie rock band Spoon, as well as co-founder, guitarist, bassist, and guitarist of the band Divine Fits.

Early life

Britt Daniel was born in Galveston, Texas, and grew up in Temple, Texas, a town of 73,000 people about an hour north of Austin. Daniel is the oldest of three children from his parents' marriage. He also has two younger half-siblings. Daniel himself, a neurologist, and a collector of guitars, was a fan of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones; after his college-bound mother ended their marriage, he picked up the guitar in high school.

Britt Daniel Career

Career

While in high school, Britt Daniel formed his first band, The Zygotes. When Daniel was a student at the University of Texas at Austin, he formed Skellington, his second band, with Travis Hartnett, Mac Stringfellow, Paul Cannon, and Mike Hurewitz. In 1991, Skellington made a Self-Drying Skellington. Gone Dry, a town's young, was released in 1991, but the Skellington EP was released a year later in 1992. The band debuted Skellington Rex, a collection of songs that were re-recorded on Spoon's debut album Telephono, before breaking up.

Daniel formed The Alien Beats with Brad Shenfeld in a three-piece rockabilly band the following year. Jim Eno, a computer chip engineer and percussionist, was brought on as a replacement drummer during a 1993 Alien Beats recording session and later became the permanent drummer. In May 1993, the Alien Beats released a 7" single, but soon after it disbanded.

Daniel appeared on NPR's news quiz show Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! "Not My Job" is the current celebrity question segment on "Not My Job."

Spoon was founded by Daniel and Eno, guitarist Greg Wilson, and bassist Andy McGuire in 1993. Spoon has been Daniel's primary musical interest.

Drake Tungsten was the pseudonym under which Daniel performed from 1994 to 1996 as a solo artist. When the Alien Beats disbanded in 1993, he decided to concentrate his music career on solo projects that had penned over the previous year - songs that were more experimental and unfit for the style of bands he had never attempted. Rather than releasing them under his proper name, Daniel decided to release them under the alias of Drake Tungsten. Clocking Out Is For Suckers, his first recorded album, was released on cassette in 1994 and was distributed throughout Austin, Texas. Tungsten's Pence, a local company, released the five-song EP Six Pence for the Sauces on local label Peek-A-Boo Records two years ago. Daniel started writing music under the moniker Spoon in 1996, with drummer Jim Eno (previously from The Alien Beats) and began writing under the moniker Spoon. On the 30 Gallon Tank EP, five tracks that were previously released by Tungsten were later re-recorded and re-released by Spoon: "I Could Be Underground" on the Girls Can Tell LP; "All the Negatives Have Been Destroyed," "Dismember" and "I Wanted To Be Your Friend" were later released; and "I Could Be Underground" on Telephono.

Since self-release of Six Pence for the Sauces, Britt Daniel stopped using this pseudonym in 1996, he has not released a solo album. However, he has started laying off songs for a forthcoming solo album, including "New York Kiss" and "Telephone My Heart," which he has been doing solo shows since at least early 2006 (see [1]).

The pseudonym "Drake Tungsten" appears to be a nod to Episode 410 (first airing in 1992) of the comedy television series Mystery Science Theater 3000. "Drake Tungsten" was one of the characters' many "tough guy names" suggested by the characters to match the model of a monosyllabic first name followed by a metal or hard surface as a last name. "Nick Pigiron" and "Russ Tilefloor" were among those that were included in the "Nick Pigiron" and "Russ Tilefloor."

According to reports, Daniel has started planning songs for a forthcoming solo album, including "New York Kiss" and "Telephone My Heart," which he has been attending solo shows since at least early 2006.

Daniel was involved in a new band called Divine Fits, which featured members from Spoon, Wolf Parade, and New Bomb Turks from 2011 to 2013. Merge Records announced A Thing Called Divine Fits, the group's debut, on August 28, 2012. On July 10, 2012, the first single from the album, "My Love Is Real," was released.
