1985–1991: Early beginnings

Peter René Baumann was born in Kölliken, Switzerland, to Italian father Luigi Cipriano and Swiss mother Ruth Baumann in 1968. Baumann began deciding to work in confectionery and bakery as a child. During his high school graduation, however, he didn't last long as his fascination with dancing coincided with the advent of breakdancing. Baumann, who has appeared in numerous dance competitions, made his way to the top of the German dance competition "Disco Kings" with his acrobatic dance style.

Baumann began his DJing career in 1985, a year after he finished second in the Swiss DJ Championships. He continued to work as a DJ at several nightclubs, including Don Paco and the Hazyland, both in Switzerland. He had enough knowledge and later decided to produce his own album. His first album "I Love You" came out in late 1989, but he didn't work as a DJ but concentrated on future releases of his own creation. DJ BoBo released two other singles, "Ladies in the House" and "Let's Groove On," in 1991.

In November 1992, Baumann first gained international recognition when he announced his "Somebody Dance With Me" in a Europe-wide smash hit. The single shot to number one in Switzerland and Sweden used catchy refrains by Emel Aykanat as well as a rap performance by himself, despite landing in many European countries, including Germany, in the Top 5. "Somebody Dance with Me" was a Gold award in Germany for delivering over 250,000 units. "Keep On Dancing," his second hit, which used the same tactics as its predecessor, made the Top 5 in Switzerland and Germany, and landed in the Top 10 in other parts of Europe. In Germany, the single achieved Gold status for sales of 250,000 units. Dance with Me was released in October 1993 and remained in the charts for a long time, followed by another single, "Take Control," from his debut album. Since the song also cracked the Top 20 in various countries, it earned him another Gold award in Germany for sales of over 250,000 units. Although DJ BoBo seemed to have already separated himself from one-hit wonders, he dropped "Everybody" in the summer of 1994, the first peak as high as No. 1. There are two in Germany and were rated platinum for exporting 500,000 units. "Everybody" differed from the previously released singles in terms of its structure; it went from house, leaning toward a mix of house and hip hop ("hip house"), with female vocalists assisting the chorus and BoBo's rap verses.

He recorded his second studio album There Is a Party in 1994, which was released in the fall of 1994. Although the album reached No. 1 in the Top 100, it was still No. 1. 4 in Switzerland where it was rated Platinum for selling over 50,000 units, and in Germany, where it spent a total of 26 weeks on the chart, eventually achieving Gold status for exporting over 250,000 units. The album's single "Let the Dream Come True" debuted in Switzerland and climbed to the top of the charts in Germany, where it was rated Gold for sales over 250,000 units.
