Personal life
In Colombo, Ekanayake attended St Clare's girls' academy. She is married to singer and actor Priyankara Perera Perera, the son of singer Milton Perera. Dilmin Perera is her son.
In late 2020, her husband Priyankara was diagnosed with a kidney disease. He was hospitalized and needed to perform a kidney transplant using an A+ or O+ type kidney.
Career
She appeared in only two ballets before going to cinema, such as Vishwa Geethaya and Saama. She and Channa Wijewardena appeared in the ballet Ukussa in 1987, alongside Channa Wijewardena. In 1991 film Dedunnen Samanaliyak directed by Yasapalitha Nanayakkara, Ekanayake made her cinema debut. She received the Sarasaviya award for the Best Upcoming Actress of the Year last year. She received the award for the Most Popular Actress at the same festival in 1992.
Her early roles were limited to commercial films. The audiences were captivated by her ability to dance and her trade mark smile. She is also known as the Sridevi of Sri Lanka. In the film Me Mage Sandai by Asoka Handagama, her career took a different direction. This serious role opened the way for some memorable performances in Sudu Kalu Saha Alu (Shades of Grey), Mage Wam Atha (My Left Hand), and Sulanga (Wind).
