Jacqueline Fernandez Career

Early life and modeling career

Jacqueline Fernandez was born in Manama, Bahrain, on August 11, 1985, and she was raised in a multi-ethnic family. Elroy Fernandez, her father, is a Sri Lankan Burgher, and her mother, Kim, is of Malaysian and Canadian descent. Her maternal grandfather, who is from Goa, India, is from Canada, and her great-grandparents are from Goa, India. Her father, a musician in Sri Lanka, moved to Bahrain in the 1980s to escape civil strife between the Sinhalese and Tamils, and she met her mother, who was an air hostess. She is the youngest of four children with one elder sister and two elder brothers. She studied mass communication at the University of Sydney in Australia, after beginning her early education at Sacred Heart School in Bahrain. She appeared on television shows in Sri Lanka after graduating. She also attended Berlitz' language school, where she learned Spanish and improved her French and Arabic.

Fernandez said she aspired to be a film actress from a young age and fantasized about being a Hollywood actress. She underwent some training at the John School of Acting. Despite being a television journalist, she turned down modelling jobs, owing to her pageant triumph. In 2006, she was crowned the queen of the Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant and represented Sri Lanka at the world Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant in Los Angeles. Fernandez called the modeling profession "a good training ground" in a 2015 interview and said, "It's about shedding your inhibitions, knowing your body, and having confidence." She appeared in a music video for the song "O Sathi" by music duo Bathiya and Santhush, as well as young female singer Umaria Sinhawansa in 2006.

Acting career

Fernandez travelled to India in 2009 for a modeling assignment. She auditioned for Sujoy Ghosh's fantasy film Aladin (2009), her first appearance. Riteish Deshmukh's character was based on Princess Jasmine's character. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN said she was "easy on the eyes and seems confident, but she has nothing to do." Despite the fact that the film was a commercial and commercial failure, she received the IIFA Award for Best Debut of the Year – Female.

Fernandez appeared in the science fiction romantic comedy Jaane Kahan Se Ayi Hai in 2010. She was portrayed as a Venus-born child who landed on Earth in search of love. The film, as well as Fernandez's appearance, received poor reviews; Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com said: "She gamely makes a fool of herself" when it comes to comparing movie stars' performances, ranging from Sridevi's Naagin dance, Mithun Chakravarthy's Disco Dancer moves, to Hum's violent headshake. If only Jaane Kahan Se Ayi Hai wasn't so keen on turning her into a love-struck Barbie, her Tara may have been a keeper." Fernandez was also chastised by critic Anupama Chopra, who called her "a pin-prick on a balloon." She made a special appearance in Sajid Khan's comedy Housefull later this year.

Fernandez's thriller Murder 2 was Mahesh Bhatt's first commercial success and marked a turning point in her career. Priya, a lonely model in a tumultuous friendship with Arjun Bhagwat, was played by Emraan Hashmi. Fernandez was praised for her appearance as well as the boldness and sex appeal she showed in the film. Gaurav Malini of The Times of India said she was "tastefully tempting" but that her affair with Hashmi was "literally half-baked." Fernandez appeared in Housefull 2 alongside Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, and Asin the following year. It was one of India's top-grower productions this year, earning 1.8 billion (US$23 million) worldwide. Fernandez received mostly critical feedback for her work. Though Gaurav Malini lauded her appearance, NDTV named her as a "blazing bimbo" who "finds] no joy in [her role]" on NDTV. Despite the scathing critiques, Fernandez received a Best Support Actress nomination at the 14th IIFA Awards for her performance.

Race 2, the ensemble action drama starring Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone, was Fernandez's first publication of 2013. She played Omisha, a femme fatale, in a role that required her to learn fencing and some acrobatics. The film made a worldwide success with a net domestically of more than 1.8 billion (US$23 million) and a net domestically of over 1 billion (US$13 million). Both Fernandez and Padukone "strut around like wounded-up automatons who are all dressed up but have nowhere to go," Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV reported in a particularly scathing analysis. Fernandez appeared in "Jaadu Ki Jhappi," Prabhu Deva's romantic comedy Ramaiya, also in the year.

Fernandez appeared in Sajid Nadiadwala's debut film, the action film Kick, a recreation of a 2009 Telugu film of the same name. She starred opposite Salman Khan in his role as Shaina, a psychiatrist. For the first time in Kick, she used her real voice. Although Sneha May Francis said she is "incredibly beautiful, and moves like a miracle," Raja Sen of Rediff.com was more dismissive of her dialogue, calling it "unfortunate." Critics were split on the film's profitability, but it became the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film with worldwide sales of over 3.75 billion (US$47 million). Fernandez was one of the most well-known Bollywood actresses in the film.

Fernandez appeared in Vicky Singh's Roy, a romantic drama that critic Sarita A. Tanwar described as a "boring, exhausting, and pretentious" film. Fernandez played two characters: Ayesha Aamir, a filmmaker in a partnership with another filmmaker (played by Arjun Rampal) and Tia Desai, a young woman in love with a robber (played by Ranbir Kapoor). Though India TV named it "her best act to date," critic Rajeev Masand thought she "may have miscast in a role that necessitates greater range." Roy failed to live up to its box-office hopes, which was a commercial setback. She made a guest appearance on the comedy-satire Bangistan later this year.

The upcoming film 'Brothers' by Karan Malhotra was Fernandez's next release. Fernandez, co-starring Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, portrayed Jenny, a fearless mother raising her child, a role that she characterized as "challenging," "intense," and "difficult." The role marked a change from the glamorous characters she had a reputation for portraying. "Convincingly pull[ing] off the attractive profile of a street fighter's wife," Dhriti Sharma of Zee News characterized her character as "soft, timid, and promising." Subhash K. Jha, a film critic, wrote that "in a small role gives her finest emotive shot," she cried, while Raja Sen said, "She [she] plays Kumar's long-sobbing wife, who is so delirious over receiving a text message that may not have included news about a Kick sequel." She appeared in the horror drama Definition of Fear, her first film appearance, later this year.

Fernandez debuted in Housefull 3, the third installment of the Housefull Series. Akshay Kumar was paired with her as her love interest in the ensemble comedy film. The Firstpost critic was dissatisfied with the film and chastised Fernandez for her inclination towards a film, where she is treated as nothing more than a "visual attraction." Despite this, the film was a commercial success, grossing 1.88 billion (US$24 million) worldwide. The action thriller Dishoom, which also grossed 1.2 billion (US$15 million) at the box-office, was her next film. She appeared as a judge on the ninth season of the dance revue Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa later this year.

According to Matthew, Fernandez appeared in Chandran Rutnam's English-Sri Lankan crime-thriller. The film was also her first cinematic appearance in Sri Lankan cinema. The film was released in Sri Lanka under the name Anuragini on April 7th, 2017. Siddharth Malhotra from the director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. was in her next film, the action-comedy A Gentleman. Critics and analysts were outraged by the film's reception, and it was a box-office flop. Later that year, she appeared in David Dhawan's comedy film Judwaa 2, opposite Varun Dhawan and Taapsee Pannu. It was a sequel to Judwaa, a 1997 comedy film. The film was a box-office hit, grossing 2.26 billion (US$28 million) worldwide. Salman Khan appeared in Race 3 in 2018, the third installment to the Race Franchise. Despite mixed reviews, Race 3 was a box office hit with more than 3 billion (US$38 million) globally, with mixed reviews.

Fernandez is filming Tarun Mansukhani's next film, Drive opposite Sushant Singh Rajput. Mrs. is a Netflix original film that will star her. Shirish Kunder's film Serial Killer directed. Bachchhan Paandey is also set to star with Akshay Kumar for the fourth time in a gangster drama.
