Nicole Beharie (born January 3, 1985) is an American actress and singer.

She is best known for her appearances in American Violet (2008), the film Shame (2011), and the biographical sports drama 42 (2013).

She appeared in the Fox supernatural drama series Sleepy Hollow from 2013 to 2017.

Early life

Beharie was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. Beharie was a child in the United States Foreign Service, so she grew up in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Panama. She attended Orangeburg Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and she is a 2003 graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Humanities, a public residential high school in Greenville. She was given a Shakespeare scholarship and trained in England.

Career

Beharie made her debut in the 2008 film American Violet, in which she appeared in the leading role. Sarah Ward appeared in The Eternal Davis Story opposite actor Rob Brown in the American sports film The Element: The Ernie Davis Story in the same year. Beharie played Shay Hunter, a troubled university student who embarks on a journey to mend her fractured family bonds with her mother Nona played by Jill Scott in the Lifetime film Sins of the Mother (2010).

Beharie performed five original songs as a singer-songwriter opposite German actor Ken Duken in the romantic drama My Last Day Without You in 2011. Piper, a struggling young woman who never leaves her apartment in Russell Leigh Sharman's film adaptation of his play Apartment 4E, portrayed her in a Russell Leigh Sharman adaptation of his play Apartment 4E. In the Steve McQueen film Shame, Beharie played Marianne, portraying Michael Fassbender's love interest.
