Diego Santiago Fagndez Pepe (born February 14, 1995) is a Uruguayan footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder or forward for MLS club New England Revolution.
He is the first player in league history to reach 50 goals, the league's first homegrown player to reach 100 appearances and 25 goals, and the youngest player in league history to reach 200 appearances.
Early life
Fagnez, a Uruguayan boy, moved to Leominster, Massachusetts, with his family when he was five years old. Fagundez began playing for Leominster Youth Soccer.
He continued to play for FC United (Massachusetts) and FC Greater Boston Bolts before joining the New England Revolution academy in 2009. He was a State Cup finalist for FC United 2005 and a 2006 champion. In 2008 and 2009, he served with the FC Greater Boston Bolts in the State Cup. From 2006 to 2009, he served for the Massachusetts Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2006 to 2009, as captain from 2008 to 2009. He was named a member of the Region I ODP team in 2007-2008. In his rookie season (50 points), he led the Revs' U-16 team to a 14–8-0 record (50 pts) in the US Soccer Development Academy's Northeast Division. In 30 appearances, he scored 20 goals in 30 appearances, tying Felix Debona for the team's top goal leader.

Personal life
Washington Fagndez, Diego's father, was a professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper with Central Espaol in the 1990s. Diego is the godson of former Uruguayan international footballer and 1995 Copa América winner Diego Dorta, after whom he was named.
Fagundez obtained his American green card in October 2013, designating him as a domestic player for MLS roster purposes.
Club career
Fagnz was signed to a New England Revolution contract on November 15, 2010, making him the first homegrown player to play for the Revolution since its youth academy was enrolled. Despite being on the main roster, he continued to train and compete for the academy team.
In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, he made his full professional debut on April 26, 2011, defeating D.C. United 32-1. On August 6, 2011, he made his league debut as a replacement against Chivas USA, where he drew a penalty (which was converted by Shalrie Joseph) and scored his first goal for New England.
Fagndez made a strong breakout season in 2013, scoring 13 goals and assisting 7. Fagndez quickly became one of MLS' top young talents, winning Player of the Week awards in week 14 of the 2013 MLS season. The Revolution announced on December 8, 2020, that they would complete the season. Fagndez was listed as out of work with the company. He made a farewell post to the Revolution and their followers on Instagram, saying that it was time for him to move forward. Fagnez said in an interview with Frank Dell'Apa of the Boston Globe that he wanted to stay with the team but that a low-ball bid was made, but he refused to accept it.
Fagndez agreed to a one-year contract with Austin FC on January 5, 2021. In his 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on April 24, 2021, Fagndez made his first appearance for his new team and scored his first goal in the franchise's history. He'll score again this week, this time notching the game winner in the franchise's 1-0 victory over Minnesota United. He was the Man of the Match for Austin's first-ever home match against the San Jose Earthquakes and quickly became a fan favorite.
In a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders as a substitute, Fagundez scored his first goal of the 2022 season, an equalizer. International career
Fagnez is a former Uruguay youth international. In October 2012, he made his Uruguay U20 debut. In that month, he appeared in two games for Uruguay U20 against Peru. In the first game he appeared as a substitute in the 83rd minute; in the second fixture he was brought on in the 45th minute.
In April 2013, he said he would be able to represent either Uruguay or the United States at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup. However, he was not called up by Uruguay and was therefore unqualified to represent the United States at the time due to not having citizenship.
In August 2014, he was called up again for the Uruguay U20 national team and played in two games against Peru, a 1–0 win win over a 1–1 draw, and a 1–1 draw.
Fagnez was named up for the 2015 South American Youth Championship in January 2015. He was instrumental in Uruguay's 1–0 victory over Colombia.
