Diego Godín Life

Diego Roberto Godn Leal (born 16 February 1986) is a Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a central defender for Inter Milan and the Uruguay national team. He was named one of the top defenders in the country and moved to Primera División Nacional.

He began his playing days in Spain, assisting Villarreal and Atlético Madrid and winning eight titles with the latter team, including the La Liga championship in 2013. Godn, a Uruguay international since 2005, has represented the country in three World Cups and five Copa América tournaments, winning the 2011 edition of the latter competition.

Early life

Godn was born in Rosario and Iris Leal, who both died. He nearly drowned while attempting to catch fish in a canal at a family gathering, but swam to shore without any assistance.

Personal life

Godn married Sofia, the daughter of José Herrera, a Uruguayan international who competed in Serie A for Cagliari with compatriot Enzo Francescoli. He is a close friend of Antoine Griezmann, who competed with him at Atlético Madrid. The former and also club colleague José Mara Giménez's goal was not celebrated during the 2018 World Cup quarter-finals match; Godn is also the godfather to Griezmann's daughter.

Club career

Godn began his professional career with Cerro at the age of 17. After his good results, he was recalled to Primera División Nacional, where he quickly became captain due to his experience and professionalism.

Godn signed a five-year contract with La Liga team Villarreal in August 2007, scoring in just his second game against Osasuna and losing in 24 matches in their best league placement ever (second). He consolidated his starting position in the upcoming seasons, mainly working with Argentine Gonzalo Rodro in the back four's heart.

On August 4, 2010, after having his best season at Villarreal – 36 games, three goals – Godn joined Atlético Madrid on a five-year deal, the two clubs agreed an initial fee estimated to be around €8 million or £6.6 million. He made his official debut for the Colchoneros on February 27th, defeating Inter Milan in the UEFA Super Cup in a total 2–0 victory.

On November 1, 2013, Godn signed a new deal with Atlético, keeping him at the club until 2018. He scored four league goals in his career, including one on the last matchday against Barcelona, where the game ended 1–1 for his team's first league title in 18 years. Real Madrid won 4–1. A week later, when he recapped the feat in the final of the UEFA Champions League to bring his team ahead.

Godn turned down a transfer to Manchester City, which was managed by his former Villarreal boss Manuel Pellegrini in 2015. He made the most appearances for the team on October 28, 2017, defeating fellow stopper Luis Perea after his 315th against Villarreal; he was nominated for the 2016 and 2018 Ballon d'Or awards.

In the Champions League round of 16, Godn scored his second goal in a 2–0 home victory over Juventus on February 20. The 33-year-old announced on May 7 that he would be retiring from the Metropolitano Stadium after a nine-year career, and he and Koke handed over the captain armband in a 1–1 draw against Sevilla on June 1st.

Inter Milan announced on July 1 that they had signed Godn for free on a three-year contract. He had already committed to a pre-contract the year before, according to a news. On September 1, he made his Serie A debut, leading Antonio Candreva to a 2–1 victory over Cagliari in the final 11 minutes.

Godn scored his first Nerazzurri goal against Torino on July 13, 2020, in a 3–1 home win over Torino in a season in which Inter finished one point behind champions Juventus. He tied against Sevilla in the 2020 UEFA Europa League Final in Cologne, a 3–2 loss for his team; only five other men had scored in the finals of European football's two top tournaments, both in August and September.

Godn joined Cagliari on a three-year deal on September 24, 2020. In a 5–2 away loss to Atalanta in which he also scored, he played his first match for them on October 4th.

Godn was released on January 20, 2022, by mutual agreement.

The 36-year-old Godn decided to a one-year extension with Atlético Mineiro on January 12, 2022. On his debut on February 6, he beat Patrocinense 3–0, a 3–0 victory over Campeonato Mineiro. He started in the 2022 Supercopa do Brasil, which Atlético won after defeating Flamengo in a penalty shootout on February 20.

Godn said in April 2022 that one of the reasons for his return to South American football was to play the Copa Libertadores, his first appearance in the tournament after a 15-year absence. He announced his resignation on June 20th, after struggling to break into the starting squad and aiming to play in the forthcoming World Cup for Uruguay.

Godn joined Vélez Sarsfield on a one-and-a-half-year deal on June 21, 2022.

International career

In 2005, Godn made his Uruguay debut against Mexico in Guadalajara at the age of 19. He scored his first international goal in another exhibition match, with Serbia and Montenegro in May 2006. He represented the country in the 2007 Copa América, defeating Peru in the first 0-3 defeat before losing his spot to Andrés Scotti in Uruguay's fight for fourth place.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Godn was selected for the team. He started playing in the first match against France (0–0) in Cape Town and was playing in a further four games for the eventual semi-finalists.

Godn played a key role in Uruguay's 2010 Copa América triumph, making one appearance as a late replacement in a 3–0 loss of Paraguay after being bedridden for several days with a virus. He was also involved in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, working with Diego Lugano in defense in four of the team's five games until they advanced to the semi-finals.

Godn was chosen by coach scar Tabárez for the 2014 World Cup, and the team captained the team in three of its four games due to Lugano's absence due to injury. He scored the only goal against Italy in the final group fixture on Sunday, advancing the nation to the knockout stage.

During the 2015 continental tournament in Chile, Godn was appointed captain for Uruguay's defense of the Copa América. He was also selected for the Copa América Centenary squad, returning home from a Carlos Sánchez long cross in the opener against Mexico, where both teams ended with ten players (1–3 loss). In the ensuing match, a 0–1 loss to Venezuela at the Lincoln Financial Fields, he earned his 100th cap in his 100th cap.

The 2018 World Cup was also selected for Godn. He made his 126th appearance against Thailand on March 25, the nation team's most capped player in history, defeating Maxi Pereira as the most capped player in the team's history.

Godn skipped the team from the Copa América in Brazil in June 2019. He repeated the feat two years later in the same world. He played the entire 90 minutes of his 150th cap against Argentina in 2022 World Cup qualifying, a 3–0 loss away from Argentina.
