Dante R. Basco (born August 29, 1975) is an American actor and singer.

He is best known for his appearances as Rufio, Steven Spielberg's Hook, and several voice acting roles, most notably Prince Zuko from Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender and Jake Long from Nickelodeon's American Dragon.

Early life

Basco was born in Pittsburg, California, and he was raised in Cerritos and Paraphrasedout, California. He has four siblings, one of whom is actor Dion Basco. He and his brothers were members of the Street Freaks breakdancing crew in Dante's early years. He attended Orange County High School of the Arts in the Music and Theatre Conservatory and graduated in 1993.

Career

He started acting in television and played minor roles. Basco's breakout came when he appeared as the leader Rufio of the Lost Boys in Steven Spielberg's 1991 film Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. After this fictional character, a punk band was born.

Basco appeared on television shows The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Hangin' with Mr. Cooper and his wife, and she appeared on Moesha on television. In the independent film The Debut, he portrayed a Filipino American with three brothers and sister after depicting characters of various Asian ethnicities other than his own. Naked Brown Men starred him and his brothers. In the 1999 film But I'm A Cheerleader, he appeared as a gay teen. In the 2006 film Take the Lead starring Antonio Banderas, he appeared as breakdancer Ramos. He hip hop dances in several films as he did in a Verizon Wireless commercial, as well as rapping and breaking in a Sprite commercial. "Wiihab" is a music video parody that he produced and co-starred in a music video parody of "Rehab"'s "Wiihab" — a music video parody.

In June 2017, he contracted with Jonah Feingold to collaborate on a new film about the character Rufio. With a Kickstarter campaign, the project's construction began.

Avatar: Braving the Elements, an official Nickelodeon companion podcast to Avatar: The Last Airbender, hosted by Basco and Janet Varney, premiered on June 22, 2021. The podcast is an episode-by-episode deep dive into the Avatarverse, with special guest appearances.

Basco has appeared in several animated films, including Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Jai Kell in Star Wars Rebels and Jake Long in American Dragon: Jake Long. In The Proud Family, he appeared as Kwok Wong. In the short-lived animated series Zevo-3, Matt Martin/Kewl Breeze appeared. In The Legend of Korra, he also spoke to General Iroh, Zuko's grandson.

He appeared in several voices for Saints Row, as well as voicing Shingo in the video games Skate, Skate 2, and Skate 3. In the video game Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and Asmodian male youth voice, he spoke about Farther. He has also appeared on Aion, Aion: Upheaval, and Mortal Kombat X.
