He is a member of the Fort Peck Tribe. He graduated from Clearwater Valley High School in 1994, where he went by the name James Spencer. He began performing in productions at the Lewiston Civic Theatre as a youth. Spencer attended Lewis Clark State College for a year and aspired to pursue photography as a profession. He almost gave up on acting before his agent called him to audition for New Moon, the sequel to Twilight.

Spencer played werewolf Sam Uley in New Moon in 2009, based on Stephenie Meyer's book of the same name. He recalled his appearance in Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, Part 1, and Part 2 of Breaking Dawn.

Spencer appeared in Billy Raven's recurring role in the Banshee TV series in 2015, just one year before making his debut in the web series Banshee Origins.

Spencer was chosen in 2021 to appear alongside Emily Blunt in The English TV series, which will be released for Amazon Prime Video and BBC One.
