Danny Denzongpa Career

Acting career

He began with B.R. Zaroorat, a first film from Ishara, appeared in 1971 (released in 1972). He got his first break in Mere Apne (1971), where he had a good role. He appeared in B.R.Chopra's Dhundh (1973), where he played a cripple and dissatisfied husband.

He was the second lead hero and appeared in more successful critically acclaimed films in the seventies, including Chor Machaye Shor, 36 Ghante, Fakira, Sangram (1976), Kalicharan, Kaala Sona, and Devata. He began getting longer roles after his appearance in the film Devata. He appeared in negative films such as Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka, Paapi, Bandish, The Burning Train and Chunoti.

He had considered quitting films in the early 1980s. When asked why he wanted to direct a film, he said, "I remember being so sick of the films I was doing in the 1980s." In those days, every villain was a dacoit, and I recall going on the sets where an actor named Tiwari was my henchmen and my den was a cave with lanterns. Tiwari was back as my henchman and the same lanterns on the next day, and I remembered him as my henchman.

I asked myself what was I doing?

I left Mumbai. I did a lot of trekking but did not do film for a few years. I told NN Sippy about a script that I had in mind. He begged me to direct, and he asked me to direct. I made Phir Wohi Raat with Rajesh Khanna and my then girlfriend Kim." After the success of his directorial debut, he was invited to appear as the hero once more in films such as Bulundi and Hum Se Badkar Kaun in 1981, which were very popular. In the film Bulundi, he appeared in two films. However, the majority of subsequent films between 1981 and 1983 were not well-received. Since the success of Phir Wahi Raat, Jeem Aur Jeene Do, and Dharm Aur Qanoon, he started getting more frequent calls to play the negative character in Hindi films. He went on to play the role of villain many times since 1984. Danny was mainly portrayed as the lead negative character opposite all the leading actors of the day, such as Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Mithun Chakraborty, Anil Kapoor, and Sunny Deol from 1984 to 1989. In an interview, he said, "Had it not been that I hadn't done the four special negative roles" with Rajesh Khanna in the lead – Phir Wohi Raat, Dharm Aur Qanoon, Bandish, and Aashiq Hoon Baharon Kahna people may not have considered me for villainous roles. I had a positive experience in Adhikar. Since he recognized and stood by me in those difficult times, which were early eighties, he holds a special place in my heart.
