Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou, a former member of "The Innocent Criminals," formed a group that performed regularly after school for hours of four hours or more.
The group's careers began when the three members were 15 years old when they received a demo of their song "Tomorrow" from SBS TV's Nomad competition. After "Tomorrow" remained in the No. ten, the group, now called Silverchair, hurriedly revealed their first album Frogstomp in 1995. For six weeks, the Australian singles chart has ranked 1 in the top 10 positions.
Freak Show was released in 1997, followed by Neon Ballroom in 1999, and then Diorama in 2002. Following Diorama's success, Silverchair went on a lengthy break before releasing their next album.
In late 2005, Johns and Silverchair reunited to announce the release of Young Modern, whose name derives from a term given to Johns by composer Van Dyke Parks. The new album was released on March 31, 2007 and was followed by Across the Great Divide tour with fellow Australian band Powderfinger.
Silverchair revealed on their website in May 2011 that the band was going to "indefinite hibernation" and that "the fire simply isn't there between the three of us at the moment." Later this month, Johns and filmmaker Josh Wakely gave a talk at TEDx Sydney in which they discussed a film that was tentatively titled My Mind's Own Melody.
