D.B. Weiss Career

Career

Weiss served as a personal assistant on films starring The Viking Sagas for New Line Cinema. He also served as a personal assistant for musician Glenn Frey for a brief period of time. In 1995, Weiss went to Dublin to study Anglo-Irish literature and talked to David Benioff, the screenwriter of Troy. They met in Santa Monica, California, three years ago, about 1998.

The Headmaster, by Weiss and Benioff, was co-written in a screenplay for a film that never was released. In 2003, they were hired to work on a new script of Orson Scott Card's book Ender's Game, in consultation with then-designated director Wolfgang Petersen. It was not used.

Lucky Wander Boy, Weiss' debut novel, is based on video games. In 2006, he said he had written his second book that "needs a second draft." Weiss completed a screenplay for a film adaptation of the video game series Halo, based on Alex Garland's script, but director Neill Blomkamp declared the venture dead in late 2007.

Weiss also worked on a script for a prequel to I Am Legend, but director Francis Lawrence said in May 2011 that he did not believe the prequel would ever happen.

Weiss worked with Benioff on the HBO television series Game of Thrones, based on George R. Martin's book book series A Song of Ice and Fire. Three episodes were also directed by Benioff and Weiss. They flip a coin to determine who would get the show's credit for the first two seasons. Weiss received directing credit for "Two Swords," Season 4 episode 1, while Benioff was credited for "Walk of Punishment," Season 3 episode 3. Both Benioff and Weiss were named co-directing the series finale "The Iron Throne."

After the final season of Game of Thrones, Weiss and Benioff announced that they will begin filming on Confederate, a sequel to HBO's Confederate. "We've been discussing Confederate for years, first as a concept for a feature film, but our experience with Thrones has shown us that no one has a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO." HBO President Casey Bloys announced in January 2020 that the campaign had been officially cancelled.

After the last season of Game of Thrones ended in 2019, Disney announced on February 6, 2018 that Weiss and Benioff would write and produce a new series of Star Wars films. On Change.org, a petition to HBO was launched towards the end of the last season. It called showrunners Benioff and Weiss "incompetent writers" and demanded "competent writers" to rewrite the eighth season of Game of Thrones in a way "that makes sense." Over 1.5 million signatures were collected at the time, which was later revealed. Richard Roeper said in the Chicago Sun Times that the backlash to the eighth season was so bad that he doubted he had "ever seen the degree of support (and, in a lesser manner, critical) vitriol leveled at" Game of Thrones.

Weiss and Benioff also agreed to produce several films and television shows solely for it in early 2019. Weiss and Benioff had left Disney due to their commitments to Netflix in late October 2019.

Weiss and Benioff's first venture on Netflix was as producers of Leslie Jones' stand-up comedy special Time Machine, which was directed by Weiss and Benioff.

Weiss, Benioff, and Alexander Woo will produce and produce a Netflix series based on the Three-Body Problem trilogy in a four-part series in September 2020.
