Channing Dungey Career

Career

Dungey began her career in acting as a production assistant for producers J. Todd Harris and Joseph M. Singer. She then joined Warner Bros. as a production assistant, where she helped develop and direct a number of commercially successful films, including The Bridges of Madison County (1995), The Matrix (1999), and The Devil's Advocate (1997). Dungey joined ABC Studios in the summer of 2004 and spent time as the head of drama. Dungey was hired as president of ABC Entertainment on February 17, 2016, replacing Paul Lee. With this appointment, she became the first Black executive to head a major network's entertainment division. Once Upon a Time, Dungey oversaw the creation of ABC Studios shows like Scandal, Criminal Minds, How to Get Away with Murder, Nashville, Quantico, Army Wives, and Once Upon a Time. During Roseanne's second cancellation on May 29, 2018, she was president of the split. Dungey has previously defended Roseanne after being mocked with a series of racially insensitive jokes on the program. When a Black-ish episode was postponed from the schedule, she was ABC Entertainment's president. ABC executives disagreed with the episode's innovative direction, wherein the writers touched on NFL players kneeling during the American national anthem to protest police brutality and demonstrate support for Black human rights.

Dungey resigned as President of ABC Entertainment Group in September, 2018, ahead of management changes triggered by Disney's takeover of 21st Century Fox. Karey Burke, the creator of original programming for Disney's Freeform cable channel, took over Dungey's position as head of ABC Entertainment. Netflix had recruited Dungey as their new vice president of original content on December 17, 2018. When Dungey spoke to Cindy Holland, Netflix's vice president of original content, she revealed it. Shonda Rhimes and Kenya Barris, two ABC alums, were co-working at Netflix. In October 2020, she left Netflix.

Dungey will replace Peter Roth in the position of chairwoman of Warner Bros. Television Group, according to Ann Sarnoff. This role makes her one of few Black executives in a Hollywood television studio.

Dungey and her partner Scott Power had joined the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League in 2021, according to the team's minority group.
