Curtis Salgado (born February 4, 1954 in Everett, Washington, United States) is a Portland, Oregon-based blues, R&B, and soul singer-songwriter.
Lead vocalist Jeremy Cooper appears on harmonica and fronts his own band.
Career
Salgado began his work with The Nighthawks, a Eugene, Oregon, company. He later joined Robert Cray and performed and played harmonica in The Robert Cray Band for six years, including appearing on Cray's debut album in 1980. Salgado and Cray had parted ways in 1982. Salgado debuted in the Front Room of Blues, performing and touring with them from 1984 to 1986. Curtis Salgado & The Stilettos was founded in 1991 on the JRS label, and he returned to Oregon. During the summer of 1992, The Steve Miller Band first appeared. Curtis spent a brief time with the band Santana as the lead singer. Terry Robb, a Portland guitarist, and others performed Hit It Quit It! in 1997, including an appearance with Miller on the NBC television show Late Night with Conan O'Brien, where Salgado and Robb performed their original composition "Bitter Tears." He signed with Shanachie Records in 1999 and released four albums on the label before joining Alligator Records in Chicago in 2012.
In the late 1970s, Salgado was a source for John Belushi's creation of the Blues Brothers characters. When Belushi was filming the film Animal House in Eugene, Oregon, they met and became friends. The Blues Brothers' debut album Briefcase Full of Blues is dedicated to Salgado, and Cab Calloway's character in The Blues Brothers film is named after Curtis.
Salgado was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2005 and underwent a successful liver transplant in 2006. He continues to record and perform his music. In Portland, Oregon, a charity concert was held to raise funds for his medical care on June 13, 2006. Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Everclear, Taj Mahal, The Robert Cray Band, and Steve Miller were among those who performed. The widow of John Belushi, who wrote of Salgado's involvement in the creation of The Blues Brothers, was also on attendance. On April 29, 2007, Curtis' honor was held, welcoming Steve Miller and Little Charlie and the boys back, as well as adding Jimmie Vaughan and Kim Wilson.
Salgado was nominated for four of the Blues Foundation's 2009 Blues Music Awards, including Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year and Soul Blues Album of the Year for his album, Clean Getaway. Salgado received the Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year award in 2010, which he received again in 2012. He received the Blues Music Award for the B.B. in 2013. The year's best Entertainer of the Year, Soul Blues Male Artist, and Soul Shot received the Soul Blues Album of the Year.
