Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III (born January 7, 1979), also known as Aloe Blacc (), is an American musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, and philanthropist.
He is best known for his singles "I Need a Dollar," "The Man," which topped the charts in the United Kingdom, and "Wake Me Up," which topped the charts in 22 countries, including Australia and the United Kingdom.
Blacc is also a member of Hip Hop's duo Emanon, alongside American record producer Exile.
Early life
In Orange County, California, Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III was born to Panamanian parents. He started playing a rented trumpet in third grade as he grew up in Laguna Hills. Blacc had what he later described as a "very specific moment" in his career as a guitarist, when it made more sense to buy the instrument. "It compelled me to be serious about it." In a 2010 interview, he said, "I couldn't just do it to get out of the class room." He was also exposed to LL Cool J in fourth grade. "It wasn't too far off from the trumpet era; I had a hip hop moment and a musician moment."
Blacc, a Renaissance and Trustee Scholar at the University of Southern California, majored in linguistics and psychology and graduated in 2001. He spent a short time with Ernst & Young in the corporate market.
Personal life
Aloe Blacc is married to Maya Jupiter, a Mexican-Australian rapper. Mandela, their first child, was born in 2013. They had their second child, a boy, in January 2016.
Career
Blacc collaborated with hip hop producer Exile and formed Emanon, the 'no name' backwards' which was inspired by Dizzy Gillespie's song "Emanon." Emanon became a mainstay of the hip hop underground in 1996, followed by the EP Acid 9 in 1999, with break-beat loops and jazz samples. They then released six projects, including the demo album Imaginary Friends (1996), a compilation of Steps Through Time (2001), and EPs Acid 9 (1998) and Anon & On (2002) respectively. Bird's Eye View, a fourth album, was released, but it was cancelled if the content was reworked into their 2016 reunion album Dystopia. Although Emanon was Blacc's main project during this time, he also performed and recorded with the members of the collective Lootpack and collaborated with the French jazz group Jazz Liberatorz.
On a 1998 episode of MTV's The Cut, Emanon appeared as contestants.
Blacc began his career as a solo artist in 2003, releasing two EPs and signing to Stone's Throwback in 2006, after label manager Chris Manak (known as Peanut Butter Wolf) heard Blacc and immediately agreed to him a deal for the 2006 full-length Shine Through. By then, he had become more concentrated on songwriting, perhaps as a result of his social awakening. "I was worried with the state of hip hop because it was primarily about the expression of masculinity." "I wondered how I could be more crafty in writing songs in the form of a rap that conveyed more than ego, style, and finesse," he said. "I figured I'd educate myself and then apply that knowledge to hip hop."
Shine Through was Blacc's first full-length album and was released in 2006. Both in the United States and abroad, it attracted brisk media attention. Shine Through had "flashes of excited musical interpolation" and screamed "some sort of greatness," according to NPR, and Absolute Punk also toured Europe and the United States with Emanon, collaborating on a project called Bee.
Blacc attended the Melbourne Red Bull Music Academy in 2006.
Blacc launched Good Things on Stones Throw Records in 2010. In 2013, the single "I Need A Dollar," which was used as the theme song to HBO's How to Make It In America, sold 1 million units; two other singles, "Life You Is Killing Me" and "Green Lights" became European hits. The media lauded Good Things, with some including positive reviews in the Los Angeles Times, Spin, NME, and Entertainment Weekly. Blacc joined Simon Fuller's XIX Management shortly after the initial unveiling of the document.
Blacc also contributed to the album Red Hot + Rio 2, which was a follow-up to the 1996 Red Hot + Rio, with all funds raised to fight AIDS/HIV and related health and social problems. The five-track EP featured songs "Love is the Answer," "Can You Do This," and "Ticking Bomb," as well as an acoustic version of "Wake Me Up." The background music for the recent Battlefield 4 game TV commercial was used by "Ticking Bomb" and "The Man" as background music for the Beats by Dr. Dre commercials starring Kevin Garnett, Colin Kaepernick, Richard Sherman, and Cesc Fàbregas. The WWE Pay-Per-View Payback also has the slogan "ticking bomb" on display.
