Diana Ross Life

Diana Ross (born March 26, 1944) is an American singer, actress, and record producer.

Ross rose to fame as the lead singer of the Detroit, Michigan, the Supremes, which became Motown's most popular female group in history, as well as one of the world's best-selling girl groups of all time.

On the US Billboard Hot 100, the organization released a record-breaking twelve hit singles, including "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Come See About Me," and "Stop!" "You Can't Hurry Love," "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "Love Child," and "Someday We'll Be Together" are all in the Name of Love. Ross released her eponymous debut solo album the same year, which included the number one Pop hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" following her release from the Supremes in 1970.

Touch Me in the Morning debuted in 1973, and she reached number one in her second solo No. 1 debut. 1 was struck.

"Theme from Mahogany" and "Love Hangover" respectively, three hits from Mahogany and Diana Ross' and their number one hit singles, as well as hit songs like "Theme from Mahogany and their number-one hit singles.

Diana's 1980 album "Upside Down" was another number one single, as well as the international hit "I'm Coming Out."

Early life

Diana Ross was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 26, 1944. She was born the second of six children to Ernestine (née Moten; January 27, 1916 – October 9, 1984) and Fred Ross, Sr. (July 4, 1920 – November 21, 2007). Diane was her mother's name, but her birth certificate was mistakenly signed out with the name Diana. Diane was a child of Detroit friends and family all her life. Ross grew up with two sisters (Barbara and Rita) and three brothers: Arthur; Fred Jr.; and Wilbert, also known as Chico.

Ross and her family lived at 635 Belmont St. in Detroit's North End neighborhood, near Highland Park, Michigan, where her neighbor, Smokey Robinson, was born. Ross' mother, St. John Baptist Church (pastor of Bessemer Baptist Church), and Mrs. William Moton in Bessemer, Alabama, when she was seven years old, causing her to become seriously ill. She and her siblings returned to Detroit after her mother recovered.

On her 14th birthday, she and her family migrated to the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects, settling at St. Antoine Street. Ross, a four-year college and preparatory magnet school in downtown Detroit, began taking classes such as clothing design, millinery, sewing, and tailoring as she aspired to be a fashion designer. She also took modeling and cosmetology classes in the evenings and weekends, for which Ross has stated that Robinson loaned her the funds she needed to attend – and was active in several of the school's extracurricular activities, including the swim team. Hudson's downtown Detroit store hired Ross as the first African American bus girl in 1960. She also provided hairdressing for her neighbors to help her neighbors get more money. Ross graduated from Cass Tech in January 1962.

Personal life

Ross has been married twice and has five children.

Ross first became involved with Motown CEO Berry Gordy in 1965. The friendship lasted many years, culminating in the birth of Rhonda Suzanne Silberstein, Ross' eldest child, in August 1971. Ross married Rhonda Ellis Silberstein, who raised Rhonda as his own daughter, two months into her pregnancy with Rhonda in January 1971, despite knowing her true paternity. Gordy was her biological father when Rhonda was 13 years old, according to Ross. Rhonda referred to Gordy as "Uncle B.B." beforehand.

Ross has two children, Tracee Joy Silberstein (Tracee Ellis Ross) and Chudney Lane Silberstein, both born in 1972 and 1975, respectively. In 1977, Ross and Silberstein separated.

Ross dated Gene Simmons, bassist and co-lead singer for the band Kiss from 1980 to 1983. They started dating after Cher, who had been friends with Simmons following their break-up, begged Ross to help him choose her Christmas gift. Simmons claims he was not dating Cher when he met Ross. Ross ended her friendship with Simmons after giving Ross the false appearance that he had revived his friendship with Cher. Simmons' story changed in 2015 when he revealed that he fell in love with Ross while dating Cher, which ended Ross and Cher's friendship.

Ross married Norwegian shipping magnate Arne N.ss Jr. in 1985 and married him the following year. Leona Naess, a folk singer from Katinka, Christoffer, and folk singer Leona Naess, became stepmother to his three elder children. Ross Arne (born in 1987) and Evan Olav (born in 1988) have two sons together. Ross and Nss divorced in 2000 after news broke that N'ss father a child with another woman in Norway. Ross considers N'ss love affair the love of her life. In a South African mountain climbing crash in 2004, N'ss was killed to his death. Ross is still close to her three ex-stepchildren.

Ross has seven grandchildren: grandson Raif-Henok (born in 2009) and Indigo (born in 2017) and granddaughter Emily Forbes (born in 2012) and granddaughter Ziggy (born in 2020) to her son Evan; grandmother Ramon Lagger Snow (born in 2005) and grandsons Leif (born in 2015) and grandsons Callaway Lane (born in 2016) and granddaughters Callaway Lane (born in 2012) and grandson Ziggy (born in 2020) have seven grandchildren; granddaughter Jagger Snow (born in) and grandsons

Diana Ross considers herself a Baptist. She performed in a church, where she got her first musical experience. Reverend William Moten, Ernestine's mother, served as a pastor in Bessemer, Alabama, for two generations. During their mother's tuberculosis outbreaks, Diana and her siblings spent a long time with their maternal grandparents.

Diana Ross was arrested for DUI in Tucson, Arizona, on December 30, 2002, while receiving heroin use therapy at a local rehabilitation facility. She spent a two-day term in Connecticut after settling.

Diana Ross Career

Career

After being introduced to the attention of music manager Milton Jenkins by Prime Minister Paul Williams at fifteen, Ross joined the Primettes, a sister of another group, the Primes. Florence Ballard, the first group member hired by Jenkins, Mary Wilson, and Williams' then-girlfriend, Betty McGlown were among the other members. The Primettes were invited to audition for Motown Records by A&R executive and songwriter Robert Bateman after winning a 1960 talent competition in Windsor, Ontario.

Ross later reached former neighbor (and rumored childhood boyfriend) William "Smokey" Robinson, who insisted that the group audition for him first took place, despite local success via live performances at sock hops, etc. In exchange for allowing him and the Miracles to employ Marv Tarplin, the Primettes' guitarist, on a forthcoming tour, Robinson agreed to move the Primettes to Motown. Tarplin was in Robinson's band(s) for the next 30-plus years. Ross' autobiography, Secrets of a Sparrow, said that the arrangement was "a fair trade."

Several Motown executives auditioned for Motown the Primettes later. Gordy's autobiography, To Be Loved, recalls that he was going to a business meeting when Ross sang "There Goes My Baby" and Ross' voice "stopped me in my tracks." He approached the firm and begged them to do it again, but Gordy told them only after graduating from high school that they had to return to work.

Undeterred, the corporation returned to Hitsville, Illinois, USA, every day, offering additional assistance for Motown's recordings, which often included handclaps and background vocals. Ross performed lead on two of the tracks this year. Ross served as its hairstylist, make-up artist, seamstress, and costume designer from the start of the company's existence. The Primettes were allowed to record their own songs at Hitsville's studio in late 1960, many written by "Smokey" Robinson, who later became vice president of Motown ("Your Heart Belongs to Me" and "A Breathtaking Guy"). "Buttered Popcorn" (featuring Ballard on lead) and "Let Me Go the Right Way" were among the trio's songs. Although these songs were regional hits, they were not national hits.

Gordy decided to join the company on the condition that their name be changed. Janie Bradford, a songwriter and Motown secretary, approached Florence Ballard, the only one at the time, to suggest a new name for the group. Ballard reportedly selected "Supremes" because it was the only one on the list that did not end with "ette." The other members were unimpressed by the new name, with Ross telling Ballard that they feared the group would be mistaken for a male vocal group (a male vocal group was, in fact, named the Supremes). On January 15, 1961, Gordy assumed the company under new ownership.

Barbara Martin left the group a year ago, limiting the quartet to three people. "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" became the company's first hit in late 1963, peaking at No. 2 in the nation. On the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, 23 of them are ranked 23nd. Gordy assigned Ross the role of the group's lead singer at the end of the year.

The group won their first number one hit with "Where Did Our Love Go" in June 1964, opening the way for another breakthrough: Ross, Wilson, and Ballard performed on ten number one hit singles from August 1964 to May 1967, all of which also made the UK Top 40. The group had also established itself as the country's most popular vocal act of the sixties, and it went on to become Motown's most popular vocal act during the sixties.

Ross began to dominate interviews with the media, answering questions directed at Ballard or Wilson. She pressed for more money than her coworkers. Diana, a misspelling on her birth certificate, was used by the woman in 1965, surprising Ballard and Wilson, who had only heard her name as Diane. Florence Ballard was fired from the Supremes by Gordy in July 1967, recruiting Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles as Ballard's replacement following significant problems with comportment, height, and alcoholism. Gordy renamed Diana Ross & the Supremes, making it simpler to charge a larger performance fee for a solo artist and a backing group as it did for other renamed Motown groups. Gordy considered leaving Ross out of the Supremes for a solo career in 1966, but later decided that the organization's success was still too important for Ross to pursue solo obligations. Ross remained with the Supremes until 1970.

In a 1968 episode of the famous NBC television series Tarzan, the group appeared as a trio of singing nuns. Ross would be the only Supremes member to be featured on many of their albums, from their early 1968 single "Forever Came Today" to Ross' final single "Someday We'll Be Together," often with session singers as in the case of Julia and Maxine Waters and Johnny Bristol. Wilson and Birdsong continued to perform on recordings, but Wilson and Birdsong continued to sing on recordings.

Gordy kept Rossa ferocious throughout this period, but Ross began suffering from anorexia nervosa as a result of Gordy's demands of her, according to her autobiography, Secrets of a Sparrow. Ross collapsed onstage during a 1967 Boston, Massachusetts performance, and had to be hospitalized for exhaustion.

Ross began performing as a solo artist on television specials, including the Supremes' own specials such as TCB and G.I.T. Among other things, there are Broadway plays, The Dinah Shore Show, and a Bob Hope special. Gordy decided that Ross would leave the organization before the end of the year, and Ross began composing her first solo work in July. Ross' first attempt to establish her own solo career was to officially introduce a new Motown recording act.

Despite the fact that she did not reveal their find, Motown's public relations staff credited Ross with discovering the Jackson 5 despite the fact that she did not reveal it. Ross will introduce the company at various public events, including The Hollywood Palace. Ross declared a resigned in Billboard from the Supremes in November. "Someday We'll Be Together," Ross' ostensible first solo album, "Someday We'll Be Together," became the group's highest single hit on the Hot 100. It was also the last Billboard Hot 100 single of the 1960s. On January 14, 1970, Ross made her last appearance with the Supremes at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ross' debut solo album, which included her signature songs "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," the former Ross' first number-one solo single. Everything Is Everything (1970) and Surrender (1971), two follow-up albums, came out shortly after. The ballad "I'm Still Waiting" became her first number-one single in the United Kingdom in 1971. Ross appeared in her first solo television special, Diana!, which also included the Jackson 5 in 1971.

Diana Ross began assisting with her first film, Lady Sings the Blues (1972), which was a loosely based biography of singer Billie Holiday. Despite some mockery of her for playing the role, Ross received critical acclaim for her role in the film in October 1972. Leonard Feather, a friend of Holiday's, praised Ross for "specifically capturing Lady Day's essence." Ross' appearance in the film earned her Golden Globe Award and Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Lady Sings the Blues' soundtrack was just as good, peaking at No. 2nd place. 1 on the Billboard 200, has been on the Billboard 200 for two weeks and has been selling two million units.

Ross' second number one hit in the United States in 1973 with the ballad "Touch Me in the Morning." Diana & Marvin, a duet album with fellow Motown artist Marvin Gaye, was released later this year. The album became a worldwide hit. Ross became Japan's first entertainer to be invited to the Imperial Palace for a private audience with Empress Nagako, the Empress Nagako's wife of Emperor Hirohito, during his reign.

Ross became the first African-American woman to co-host the Academy Awards in April 1974, alongside John Huston, Burt Reynolds, and David Niven.

Last Time I Saw Him (1973), Ross' second film, Mahogany, was released in 1975 after a modestly successful album, Last Time I Saw Him (1973). Billy Dee Williams, her co-star in Lady Sings the Blues, and the film had her reunited with her in the studio, with her costume designed by Ross herself. Mahogany's story as a young fashion designer and industry toast was a turbulent production from its inception. Tony Richardson, the film's original producer, was shot during filming, and Berry Gordy assumed the director's chair himself.

During filming, Gordy and Ross clashed, with Ross leaving the scene before the shooting was complete, prompting Gordy to use secretary Edna Anderson as a body double for Ross. Despite a box-office success, the film was not well received by the critics: Time magazine's review of Gordy for "squandering one of America's most abundant natural resources, Diana Ross." Despite this, Ross had her third top-one hit in the United States with "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)."

Ross' fourth solo number one hit, "Love Hangover," a sensuous, dramatic mid-tempo song that bursts into a fast-tempo disco hit a year later. Ross' "An Evening with Diana Ross" tour debuted later this year. The tour's success culminated in a two-week stay at Palace Theatre and a 90-minute Emmy-nominated television special of the same name, with special make-up effects by Stan Watson, in which Ross portrayed legendary cabaret artist Josephine Baker and blues singer Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, as well as a Special Tony Award.

Baby It's Me (1977) and Ross (1978) were released in modestly.

Motown acquired the film rights to The Wiz, an African-American reinterpretation of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, in 1977. The film was supposed to feature stage actors who had appeared on the stage, but producer Rob Cohen was unable to garner the attention of any major Hollywood film studios. The actress's involvement in the production was not until Ross convinced Cohen to cast Dorothy (instead of Stephanie Mills, who portrayed Dorothy on Broadway) as Dorothy.

Dorothy went from a schoolgirl to a schoolteacher in this film's script, which resulted in a change in the film's script. Michael Jackson, Ross' ex Motown labelmate, was eventually given the Scarecrow role, which was also performed on stage. Ross and Jackson's recording for "Ease on Down the Road" was limited to only modest dancing success. Their second appearance, although as part of The Wiz, "Brand New Day," has had some success in other countries.

The Wiz film version had been a $24 million production, but the box office's receipts dropped to $21,049,053. Despite the fact that pre-release television broadcast rights had been sold to CBS for over $10 million, the film still earned a net loss of $10.4 million for Motown and Universal. It was the most expensive film musical ever made at the time. Ross' short film career ended Ross' short film career on the big screen and contributed to the Hollywood studios' refusal to produce the all-black film projects, which had been popular during the early to mid-1970s during the blaxploitation period of the early to mid-1970s.

Ross recorded The Boss in 1979, extending her fame with dance audiences as the title song became a number one dance single. Ross appeared on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show on July 16, 1979, with Lynda Carter, George Carlin, and Muhammad Ali as guests. During her "Tour '79" concert tour, Ross hosted Standing Room Only, filmed at Caesars Palace's Circus Maximus Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ross' entrance is noted for its opening, in which Ross literally makes her way into a movie theater from a movie screen. Ross appeared on The Boss album's title track as a featured artist during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City in November of that year.

Diana Ross, Ross' most well-selling album to date, was released in 1980. The album was produced by Chic's guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, the latter's fifth chart-topper single in the United States.

Ross' theme song to the film It's My Turn debuted in late 1980, earning him a top ten hit. Ross, a Hollywood actress, co-star Lionel Richie, produced the duet ballad "Endless Love" with her. The album will debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for her sixth and final single.

At the time of 1980, Ross began talks to leave Motown. Ross was awarded US$250,000 as severance after more than 20 years with the brand. Ross was given a $20 million, seven-year recording deal, giving her complete creative control of her albums. Ross reportedly begged Berry Gordy if he'd match RCA's quote before signing up for the brand. Gordy said doing so was "impossible." Ross was signed by RCA on May 20, 1981. Ross' album was the most expensive recording contract in music history at the time.

Why Fools Fall in Love, Ross' first RCA album, was released in October 1981. The album's over a million copies and featured hit singles including her spinoff of the classic hit of the same name and "Mirror Mirror." Ross formed Anaid Productions ("Diana" spelled backwards), and soon after, she began investing heavily in real estate and touring extensively in the United States and abroad.

Diana Ross hosted her first TV special in four years before the introduction of Why Do Fools Fall in Love. Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Dallas actor Larry Hagman, music impresario Quincy Jones, and members of the Joffrey Ballet were filmed at Inglewood, California's 17,500-seat Forum indoor stadium and featured performances by Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Dallas actor Larry Hagman, Dallas actor Larry Hagman, Joffrey Ballet's 17,500-seat special.

Ross performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XVI in early 1982 and appeared on the musical variety show Soul Train. Ross performed several songs from Why Fools Fall in Love, which was completely dedicated to her.

Ross was honoured on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 6, 1982. She continued with Silk Electric's "Why Do Fools Die from Love" featuring Michael Jackson-written and produced "Muscles," resulting in Ross' second Top 10 Grammy nominee status. On the strength of that song, the album eventually went gold. Following the introduction of Ross' debut on the Ross album, she stepped further out of her earlier soul-based sound for a more pop rock-oriented sound. Despite the fact that the Ross album contained the Top 40 hit song, "Pieces of Ice," the Ross album did not have any more hits or achieve gold status.

Ross performed a free concert on Central Park's Great Lawn, which was broadcast live by Showtime on July 21, 1983. The profits from the concert will be used to create a playground in the singer's name. A torrential downpour started midway through the show's beginning. Ross attempted to continue performing, but the show had to be called off after 45 minutes due to the severe weather. Ross pleaded for the large audience to leave the theatre safely, pledging to return the following day.

There was no rain on the next day, but the memorabilia that was supposed to be sold to raise funds for the playground had already been destroyed by the storm. When journalists learned the exorbitant costs of the two concerts, Mayor Ed Koch and the Parks Department commissioner chastised Ross. Ross gave Koch a check for US$250,000 for the project during a subsequent mayoral press conference. The Diana Ross Playground was built three years ago.

Ross was born in 1984 and is known as Swept Away. The album contained "All of You," a duet with Julio Iglesias. Ross' album and Iglesias' 1100 Bel Air Place, his first English-language album, were both included on his album and Iglesias' 1100 Bel Air Place. It became a worldwide success, as had Lionel Richie's "Missing You," written as a salute to Marvin Gaye, who had been killed earlier this year. Swept Away also received a gold medal in sales.

Eaten Alive, her 1985 album, produced by Bee Gees' Barry Gibb, received a number one single overseas and a top-20 spot on the charts. The song "Chain Reaction" debuted at number one in the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Israel, and Ireland, as well as Ireland's, and the title track, a project with Michael Jackson and Gibb, did well. Both songs had strong music videos that fueled their success. The "Eaten Alive" video was based on the 1970s horror film "The Island of Dr. Moreau," while the one for "Chain Reaction" commemorated the 1960s American Bandstand-style TV shows. Ross and actor Joseph Gian's film "Experience," the third single from the album, was revived.

Ross appeared on "We Are the World" charity single in Africa in 1985, which has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Ross' 1987 sequel to Eaten Alive, Red Hot Rhythm & Blues, found less success; it fell to No. 63. The Billboard Top R&B Albums chart has a 39, and No. 1 has no. In Sweden, there are 12 people. However, the album's accompanying television special was nominated for three Emmy Awards (Ray Aghayan and Ret Turner) and Outstanding Lighting Direction (Electronic) for a Miniseries or a Special (Greg Brunton).

Ross hosted the 13th annual American Music Awards on January 27, 1986. Ross will host the 14th annual telecast next year.

Ross, a 1988 model, chose not to renew her RCA contract and had been discussing with her long mentor Berry Gordy to return to Motown. Ross tried to warn Gordy that she should not sell Motown, but he ended up selling it to MCA Records in June of that year. Ross was asked to return to the Motown brand as a part-owner following the company's auction; Ross accepted the bid.

Ross was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Supremes alongside her former singing partners Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard in the same year. She also produced the theme tune to the animated adventure drama film The Land Before Time (1988). "If We Keep On Together" became a worldwide hit, topped No. 1 in Japan.

Despite Ross' new album, 1989's Workin' Overtime, was not a commercial success, despite the fact that the title track was listed in the top three of the Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip Songs chart. The album reached No. 1. On the Billboard Hot R&B Albums chart, 34 on the top 25 places in Japan and the United Kingdom, with top 25 placements in Japan and the United Kingdom, and one of the United Kingdom, receiving a silver medal in the former world. Subsequent releases, including The Force Behind the Power (1991), Take Me High (1995), and Every Day Is a New Day (1999), all with similar outcomes, with more international success than domestic success.

Ross, one of the few American artists to have headlined the annual Royal Variety Performance, presented a sample of her UK hits before Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London in 1991. This was her second appearance at the Royal Variety Exhibition, the first being in 1968 with the Supremes.

When the album reached double platinum in the United Kingdom, the Power Behind the Power caused a global comeback of sorts. The near-topping No. 1 has led the way. "When You Tell Me That You Love Me," is a hit song in the United Kingdom. Westlife, an Irish boy band, has also reached No. 2 on the single's duet version. In 2005, there were two in the United Kingdom. The album gained Gold record recognition in Europe and Japan as The Force Behind the Power's grew to gold level in the region. "One Shining Moment" was one of the album's new top ten hits, as well as another Top ten hit.

Ross returned to acting in the 1993 television film Out of Shadow. Ross received her third Golden Globe nomination for her role in the TV series, despite not winning.

One Woman: The Ultimate Collection, a career retrospective compilation, became the UK's top-selling compilation in 1994, achieving quadruple platinum and selling well across Europe and the English-speaking world. The retrospective was EMI's alternative to Motown's box set Forever Diana: Musical Memoirs.

Ross appeared at the opening of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in Chicago, where she famously skipped a penalty kick as part of her appearance, as well as during the 1995 Rugby League World Cup finals at Wembley Stadium.

Ross appeared at the Super Bowl XX halftime show on January 28, 1996, which was held at the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Diana Ross: Live in Japan, Ross' Tokyo concert, was broadcast live at the city's Nippon Budokan Stadium earlier this month.

Ross was given the Lifelong Contribution to the Music Industry Award by the World Music Awards in May 1996. "In the Ones You Love," "You Are Not Alone" and "I Hear (The Voice of Love) were released on November 29, EMI's compilation album, Voice of Love," featured singles "In the Ones You Love," "You Are Not Alone" and "The Voice of Love."

EMI published "Promise Me You'll Try" on February 8, 1997, the Japanese version of Ross' album A Gift of Love. She appeared with operatic tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras again at the Superconcert of the Century concert, held in Taipei, Taiwan, in May. The Jackson 5 was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on May 6 by the author.

Ross hosted the Motown 40 telecast on ABC on February 19, 1998. Ross was named the most popular female singer in the United Kingdom charts in 1999, based on a tally of her career hits. Madonna will soon replace Ross as the UK's most popular female artist. Ross performed at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards in September of the year and stunned the audience by touching rapper Lil' Kim's naked breast and pasty-covered nipple, awed by the young rapper's brashness.

Every Day Is a New Day" co-starred Jane and Brandy Norwood in 1999, a television film that was broadcast prior to Ross' release of their album, Double Platinum.

Ross reunited with Mary Wilson in 1976 to attend Florence Ballard's funeral service, despite her death in February of that year. Ross decided to reunite with Wilson and Cindy Birdsong for the television series Motown 25: Today, Forever. Due to time constraints, the Supremes did not rehearse their appearance for the evening. A scheduled medley of hits was postponed.

Wilson decided to recreate their choreography from their final Ed Sullivan Show appearance rather than following producer Suzanne de Passe's instructions to recreate their choreography from their last Ed Sullivan Show appearance, then proceeded to sing lead on the group's last number-one hit song, "Someday We'll Be Together," which Wilson did not perform on.

Wilson introduced Berry Gordy from the stage (unaware that the program's script called for Ross to introduce Gordy), later when Ross subtly demanded Wilson's hand-held microphone, saying, "It's been taken care of." Gordy was then reintroduced by Ross. These scenes were cut from the final edit of the taped special, but they nevertheless made their way into mainstream news; People magazine announced that "Ross [did] some elbowing to pull Wilson out of the spotlight.

Ross and mega-tour promoter SFX Entertainment (which later became Live Nation) began talks about a Diana Ross tour in 1999, which would include a Supremes segment. The promoters considered a Supremes tour instead of going through Ross during talks. Ross agreed. Ross, the tour's co-producer, invited all living former Supremes to attend. Neither Jean Terrell nor Susaye Greene, a late 1970s entrepreneur, declined to participate. Former Ladies of the Supremes Lynda Laurence and Scherrie Payne of the 1970s were touring as Former Ladies of the Supremes.

Ross contacted Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, who later began negotiations with SFX. Wilson and Birdsong (who permitted Wilson to negotiate on her behalf) fell apart when Wilson refused to accept SFX and Ross' $4 million for 30 performances. Payne and Laurence, who were still discussing with SFX, decided to perform with Ross on the tour following Wilson's last deadline.
