Early life

Kelly Lynn Bowersox (née Bowlander) and William Lester Bowersox were born in Elliston, Ohio, to Bowersox and her twin brother, Karl. When she was two years old, her parents divorced. Bowersox was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age six. She attended Oak Harbor High School in Oak Harbor, Ohio, and later attended the Toledo School for the Arts in Toledo, Ohio. She played flute in the school marching band and was in choir. Bowersox was a child of the age of ten in her first professional performance. She appeared in Toledo, most notably Papa's Tavern, and The Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio.

She moved to Chicago, where she performed as a busker at train stations, including the Washington and Lake Redline stops, at the age of 17. She appeared at open mics at the Heartland Cafe, Uncommon Ground Clark and Grace, and Devon locations, including In One Ear. She has also performed in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. Bowersox said she lived in poverty at the time and had to resort to asking insulin at a pharmacy to treat her diabetes after her health insurance expired, according to Bowersox.

Bowersox was chosen to represent Chicago folk musicians in the Sister Cities program "Experience Chicago," held in Birmingham in 2006. Bowersox toured the world in 2007, including Memphis, Oaxaca City, Ankara, and Istanbul. In 2009, she gave birth to Anthony Levi Mason, a son who was born six weeks before she died, according to Bowersox.

Personal life

On October 10, 2010, Bowersox and singer Brian Walker were married at Uncommon Ground Café in Chicago, the Chicago restaurant where the couple had appeared six years earlier when both were attending Open Mic Night. On May 6, 2013, it was announced that they were ending their marriage.

Bowersox came out bisexual on Good Day L.A. to promote her Christmas album on November 26, 2013. "I have been bisexual as long as I can remember," she said. Bowersox performed her song "Coming Out For Christmas," which delves into the subject.
