Career
Penny's acting career began in 1983 when she was cast as Penny in Inspector Gadget's first season. Her distinctive, throaty voice was instantly recognisable to viewers, as well as casting agents, who began regularly casting her in animated programs. Many of these were part of cult franchises, like The Care Bears (1985) and Ewoks (1985, which were part of the Star Wars series).
In 1988, summer was portrayed as the freespirited "Freddie" Brooks in The Cosby Show spin-off A Different World. She remained a regular cast member of the show from 1988 to 1993.

Summer has been singing since an early age and has performed in her first band at 13. She made the theme tune for OWL/TV in 1985. In 1990, she appeared on two tracks for fellow A Different World cast member Jasmine Guy's self-titled album. Submitting to Change, a 1993 release by her band Subject to Change, as the lead singer. Capitol Records did not officially release the album due to creative inconsistencies; the records that were released were sold as promos and are considered a rare find. With a strong political message and a rock-soul fusion sound, the band remained popular as a co-headlining act with other musicians. Summer 1998, Lenny Kravitz, a local and visiting guest artist, released her solo album Street Faerie, which had moderate success. Despite the fact that Summer toured as Kravitz's opening act, her brand was no longer available, and a planned spot with Lilith Fair was postponed. The label continued to advertise the album, sending out a four-track sampler and issuing remix singles of the song "Revelation Sunshine" in Europe, as well as a special single dedicated to Austria.
