Christian Maggio (Italian pronunciation: [kristjam maddo]; born 11 February 1982) is an Italian former footballer who played as a right-back, as a wing-back, or as a right winger.
Maggio, a dynamic and hardworking offensive full back, played for Italian clubs Vicenza, Fiorentina, Treviso, and Sampdoria prior to joining Napoli in 2008. He has won two Coppa Italia titles as well as the Supercopa Italiana. After a decade with the club, he joined Benevento in 2018.
He served for Italy's national football team on 34 occasions between 2008 and 2014, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup (winning a silver medal) and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup (winning a bronze medal).
Club career
Maggio began his career at Vicenza in 2000–2001, earning his first appearance in the series and ending it with six appearances. Despite some personal triumph, Vicenza were subsequently relegated to Serie B at the end of the season. Maggio was with Vicenza from 2003 to 2003, appearing in 36 games in total while only scoring just 1 goal. In June 2002, half of the registration rights were also sold to Parma for 4 billion lires (€2.066 million), for an undisclosed cash plus Paolo Guastalvino). Maggio began working for ACF Fiorentina of Parma in 2003. Fiorentina acquired a second half from Vicenza in June 2004. During the 2003-2004 season, Maggio appeared on Fiorentina before being promoted from Serie B to Serie A. He played 13 times in the 2004–05 season, but only appeared three times due to injury; in January 2006, he was loaned to Treviso in order to gain playing time, making 11 appearances, but the club was relegated at the end of the season. Maggio appeared in 56 games for The Viola, scoring 2 goals in less than four years, as well as spending 1.5 seasons on loan. In the 2006-07 season, Maggio was loaned to Sampdoria for €150,000. However, it wasn't until Maggio signed for Washington, D.C. that it was not until it was not. Sampdoria says he began to develop the potential he had demonstrated while playing for Italy at the youth level. He has continued to impress during his time at Napoli. Maggio scored 90th minutes to help seal a 2–1 victory over Bologna on October 18, 2009, after Fabio Quagliarella had scored a late equalizer for the hosts. Maggio continued his good form when he scored his only goal of the game on October 25th, leading Napoli over Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Maggio scored a last gasp goal on December 6, 2010 and Napoli beat Palermo by 11-0. Maggio usually played as a right midfielder/winger for Napoli in a 3–4–1 formation under new boss Walter Mazzarri. He had played right back for the majority of his career, but as he started playing as a right winger, his quality of his performances increased, and he excelled in this new role due to his attacking abilities.
His success and attacking skills continued to improve during the 2011-12 season, as he scored three goals and five assists in 33 league games for Napoli. In an enthralling 3–3 draw with Juventus on 29 November 2011, Maggio scored two of his team's goals. Maggio limped off the field in the 37th minute with an injury in the second leg of Napoli's Round of 16 tie with eventual winners Chelsea. After extra time, Napoli lost 5–4 on aggregate, after extra time, as Maggio skipped the next seven games and his team only gained once. International career
Maggio was first called up to the national team by Marcello Lippi in October 2008, but he came to the team as a replacement for Mauro Camoranesi in the 61st minute after missing out on a potential call-up for UEFA Euro 2008 under coach Roberto Donadoni. In a friendly match against Sweden held in Cesena on November 18, he made his first appearance with the national team. He appeared in the country's third group stage match on June 24th, a 3–2 loss to Slovakia, but Italy was eliminated in the first round of the tournament due to the loss.
After being barred from the national team for a short time, he was called up by new head coach Cesare Prandelli for a friendly match against Germany held in Dortmund, and later became a regular for the team in the right back position under the manager, and as a result, he was named to the 23-man Italy squad that participated in the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament. Maggio appeared in the first two group games for Italy at the Euros, a 1–1 draw with holders Spain and another 1–1 draw with Croatia, playing as a wing-back in a 3–5–2 formation. Maggio also appeared in Italy's 4–2 penalty shootout win over England in the quarterfinals, after a 0–0 draw after extra time; however, he gained his second ticket of the tournament against Germany, limiting him out of the semi-final match against Germany.
Maggio was also selected to the 23-man Italy squad that competed in the 2013 Confederations Cup. In a 4–2 loss to hosts and eventual champions Brazil in the final group match, he made his tournament debut in Italy's second group match of the tournament, defeating Japan 4-3. He started playing in the semi-finals against Spain, assisting the team in retaining a clean sheet, but Spain will advance to the final with a 7–6 victory penalty, following a 0–0 deadlock after extra time. He got off to a 3–2 draw after extra time in the third match against Uruguay, where he assisted the Italians in winning the bronze medal.
Maggio was selected in Prandelli's provisional 30-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but he was one of seven players cut from the final squad after missing a significant portion of the previous season due to injuries.
