Adebayo Akinfenwa Career

Career

Akinfenwa joined Lithuania's FK Atlanta's as a youth on the recommendation of his manager, whose Lithuanian wife's brother knew a member of the coaching staff there. Akinfenwa was the winning goal in the 2001 Lithuanian Football Cup final and has participated in the UEFA Cup qualifying rounds for two seasons as a coach. "Coming from London, where nobody would disrespect me, this was just brazen," he said later. He spent two years at the club before returning to the United Kingdom in 2003, where he joined Welsh Premier League champions Barry Town. During his time at Jenner Park, Akinfenwa helped Barry to win the Welsh Cup and Welsh Premier League. However, the club faced a financial strain and cut its professional playing staff just a few games into his career. Akinfenwa made a quick return to Boston in October 2003, scoring a last-minute winner in the Football League Trophy's debut against Swindon Town. He went to Leyton Orient the following month but was released after one month. He moved to Rushden & Diamonds in December 2003 and joined Doncaster Rovers, his fifth club of the season.

Akinfenwa left clubs in July 2004 and joined Torquay United as a replacement for David Graham. He scored 14 league goals from 2004-2005 and was named the supporter's Player of the Season, but he was unable to help the club prevent relegation to League Two. He refused to sign a new deal with Torquay at the end of the season.

Akinfenwa transferred to Swansea City in July 2005, for a £85,000 price in remuneration, considerably less than the £300,000 asking price Torquay paid for his signature. On his debut against Tranmere Rovers, he scored, as well as the first competitive goal scored at Swansea's new Liberty Stadium. He scored the winning goal in the 2006 Football League Trophy Final in which Swansea defeated Carlisle United 2–1. In his first season, he also helped Swansea make the League One promotion play-off final. The match was a penalty shoot-out after a 2–2 draw, but Akinfenwa was one of two Swansea players to miss with their penalties, earning promotion to Barnsley. He was a regular the following year before suffering a broken right leg in the 2–0 loss at home to Scunthorpe United that ended his season. This came after a fractured left shin in October.

He left Swansea's new deal and signed Swindon Town on June 29, 2007, at the end of the 2006–07 season. However, he was not a medical student.

He joined Millwall's League One team in November 2007 after a period of rehabilitation and preparation. However, he had no goals in seven appearances.

Akinfenwa signed a Northampton Town contract until the end of the 2007-08 season on January 18, 2008. He made his debut against Swindon Town, where he came off the bench to score a late equalizer in a 1–1 draw. In a 1–1 draw against Leeds United, he had the same effect on his home debut, scoring the equalizer in a 1–1 draw. Despite not being in the next game against Yeovil Town, he started the next home match against Gillingham and scored two goals in a 4–0 win. He had three more goals this season.

Despite expressed interest from Leyton Orient and Grimsby Town, Akinfenwa agreed to a new one-year deal at Northampton on May 30. He started the 2008–09 season by scoring twice in three games by the end of September.

In May 2010, Akinfenwa's stay at Northampton came to an end. He had been offered a new contract, but Northampton was unable to reach an agreement with him within a set timeframe.

He signed for Gillingham on a one-year deal on July 29, 2010, and scored on his debut against Cheltenham Town on his debut. Although at the Gills, Akinfenwa was able to form a strong relationship with Cody McDonald, and the pair were able to score 36 goals between them that season.

Akinfenwa had been offered a new deal by Gillingham at the end of the 2010-11 season, but after new Cobblers boss Gary Johnson brought him in to "capture the fans's imagination," Akinfenwa returned to Sixfields on May 25th, 2011. On August 16, he scored his first goal against Bristol Rovers. Akinfenwa scored his first and his first in a match against Accrington Stanley on November 10, 2012, the first professional hat-trick in the game to date. Akinfenwa auctioned the shirt he wore in this match and donated the proceeds to a supporters' charity three years later, with Northampton struggling financially. At the end of the 2012–13 season, Northampton Town released him.

On July 2, 2013, Akinfenwa joined Gillingham on a free transfer. Akinfenwa left the club on the expiration of his one-year deal after reigniting his fruitful partnership with Cody McDonald, scoring 10 goals over the course of the 2013–14 season and placing third in their Supporters Player of the Year awards.

He signed for AFC Wimbledon, a League Two team, on June 20, 2014, after he had been trying to sign for 14 months. AFC Wimbledon defeated Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup on January 5th, despite losing by 1–2 at the club. Akinfenwa's deal with Wimbledon came to an end on June 8, boosting clubs in League One and Major League Soccer. Akinfenwa was dismissed from his employment on May 30, 2016, after scoring a penalty in a 2–0 win over Plymouth Argyle in the League Two Play-off Final. In a post-match interview, he told Sky Sports: "I think I'm technically unemployed, so any executives hit me up on WhatsApp and get me a job."

Akinfenwa signed for Wycombe Wanderers following his release from AFC Wimbledon. He was nominated for the EFL Player of the Season award in April 2018. Akinfenwa scored 54 goals against Doncaster Rovers on February 29, 2020, becoming Wycombe's highest goal scorer in the English Football League. Akinfenwa and Wycombe defeated Oxford in the 2020 League One play-off Final on July 13, 2020, for the first time in both the player's career and the club's history. With ten goals, Akinfenwa's joint-top league goal scorer finished the season.

Akinfenwa agreed to a new one-year deal with the club on July 8th, 2021. He said that it would be his last season in professional football, and that after football, he was considering moving to acting or professional wrestling. Akinfenwa's last game for Wycombe was the 2022 League One play-off Final, where he was a 75th minute replacement, but couldn't prevent a 2–0 loss to Sunderland.
