Philippe Mexes Career

Club career

Mexès was born in Toulouse, Haute-Garonne. At the age of 12, he began his youth at Auxerre. He started training at Bastille, the youth squad, where he quickly became one of the key players for youth teams in which he captained them to many cups. He won the 2003 Coupe de France with the senior squad.

Mexès was hired by Roma in June 2004 and committed to a four-year deal. Roma was later found guilty of misconduct after AJ Auxerre, his former club, did not consent to the transfer; the player's decision was solely the player's decision. Mexès was banned, but the ban was later lifted for a short time. Mexès won his first Serie A match against Fiorentina on September 12, 2004. The appeal of the six-week suspension was dismissed in February 2005, but Mexès was suspended until April. The saga was eventually settled by Mexès, or Roma would have to pay Auxerre €7 million.

Mexès began the 2005–06 campaign on the bench after a difficult first season with the Capitoline club. Roma's transfer offence in the purchase of Mexès resulted in the club's suspension of signing players other than free agents in 2005, but the ban was lifted in August. Luciano Spalletti's squad did not sign anyone due to the ban, but he was a key player for Luciano Spalletti's squad. Mexès played nine out of a total ten games for Roma in UEFA Cup qualifying tournaments. He also participated in the final of 2005-06 Coppa Italia. The Giallorossi came fifth in Serie A, first qualifying only for next year's UEFA Cup, but Roma were awarded second place in 2006, allowing Mexès to play for the first time in the UEFA Champions League.

He established a central defensive alliance with Cristian Chivu, making him one of Roma's key players. The club qualified to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals from 2006–07. At 2006–07 Coppa Italia Finals, the club met Inter Milan once more. Roma won 7–4 aggregate over, with Matteo Ferrari, Cristian Chivu, and Christian Panucci on defense. With the third lowest goals conceded total, the Giallorossi also finished second in Serie A.

Mexès has signed a new five-year deal, in which he will earn €4.5 million in the first year, up to €5 million per year in gross annual salary this year (pre-taxed salary). For the second year in a row, the Giallorossi reached the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, but lost to eventual champions Manchester United, a second time in the same year. Roma dipped an 11-point gap with Inter Inter, finishing second behind Inter, three points behind Inter, in Serie A. Mexès scored the first goal for Roma in the 2008 Coppa Italia Final, and the Giallorossi swung for victory, defending their title.

Roma qualified for the knockout stage of the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League, with Mexès in defense. Mexès missed the second leg against Arsenal and Roma lost in a 6–7 penalty shoot-out. Roma's defense, on the other hand, conceded the fifth most goals in Serie A.

Mexès scored on a Francesco Totti free kick in Roma's first UEFA Europa League match on July 30, 2009, drawing Roma. Despite receiving marginally less playing time with Internel's transfer of Nicolás Burdisso, Mexès contributed to a defense, which saw Roma finish second in Serie A. In the latter part of 2010, he regained his position in the team.

Mexès had to be recalled early in the second half of a Serie A match against Juventus on April 3rd, 2011 because of a left knee injury. It was announced that he had cruciate ligament damage after the match. He recovered after the accident two days after it occurred. Mexès denied rumors that he had played his last match for Roma in an interview after his surgery. With his deal set to end in June 2011, he hinted that he would be leaving, with AC Milan likely to sign him.

Mexès will play for Milan the following season, according to Milan CEO Adriano Galliani, who also confirmed a transfer for Mexès.

Mexès was given the squad number 5, the same number he had at Roma. In their Primavera, Milan's youth team, he played his first unofficial match for the club. He appeared in only 45 minutes as the game was supposed to aid him in his recovery from his long-term knee injury. He made his Serie A debut with Milan on October 26, 2011 when the home match was won 4–1 against Parma. In his debut season with Milan, he made 24 appearances in his debut season and was the club's third choice central defender behind starting duo Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva.

Both Nesta and Silva had left the club, but Villareal's Cristián Zapata had been brought in. Mexès and Zapata were Milan's first choice central defensive pair, scoring just 12 goals in the second half of the 2012–13 Serie A season. Mexès scored his first goal for Milan on November 21, 2012, in a 2012-13 UEFA Champions League group match against Anderlecht that was rated one of the year's best goals. In the last minutes of the game, Mexès scored his first goal for Milan in Serie A, giving Milan a third-place finish and qualifying for next year's Champions League.

Mexès scored his first goal of the 2013-14 season in a 3–1 home win over Cagliari, scoring his second goal of the match in the 30th minute of play. During the season, he was a key player in Milan's back four. Mexès received his second bookable offence late in the game against Juventus, giving him a four-match suspension. Mexès has been Milan's top performer so far this season, with the Rossoneri having been dissatisfied in the league, ranking 6th, 12 points behind leaders Juventus. Inzaghi has also referred to Mexès, alongside fellow Americans Rami and Ménez, as his team's greatest offensive threat ahead of Torres and El Shaarawy.

Milan revealed on July 8, 2015, Mexès had signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2016. Mexès was awarded the FIFA Puskás Award in November 2015 for his contribution to a FIFA Champions Cup friendly match against Inter, a well-fought volley from the edge of the area, on July 25.

Silvio Berlusconi, the club's president, and Kevin-Prince Boateng and Mario Balotelli, announced their resignation on May 25th. He didn't find any club for more than a year after leaving Milan. In November 2017, he announced his resignation.

International career

Mexès competed for France's under-18 and under-21 national teams, as well as the senior team, where he was a squad member of the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament.
