He made his senior appearance on February 1, 2001, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances, in addition to leading So Paulo to its first and only Torneio Rio-Sandrafo Paulo championship, in which he scored two goals in two minutes against Botafogo, which So Paulo won 2–1.

He scored ten goals in 22 games over the previous season, and his results were already attracting interest from European clubs by this time. Kaká made 58 appearances for So Paulo in total, scoring 23 times.

The persistent European interest in Kaká culminated in his move to Milan, the Italian club's Ayre, for a fee that has been criticized in retrospect as "peanuts" by club owner Silvio Berlusconi. He cracked the starting lineup within a month, swapping Rui Costa for Rui Costa in the attacking midfield playmaking role, behind strikers Jon Dahl Tomasson, Filippo Inzaghi, and Andriy Shevchenko. In a 2–0 win over Ancona on his debut in Serie A, he made his Serie A debut. He scored ten goals in 30 appearances during the season as Milan defeated the Scudetto and the UEFA Super Cup, as well as several vital contributions, such as the cross, which culminated in Shevchenko's title-deciding headed goal, as Milan won the Scudetto and the UEFA Super Cup, although not finishing runner up in the Intercontinental Cup and the 2003 Supercopa Italiana. Milan also reached the Coppa Italia semifinals, losing out to eventual champion Lazio and being barred from the Champions League quarterfinals by Deportivo La Corua. In 2004, Kaká was named Serie A Footballer of the Year for both the Ballon d'Or (finishing 15th) and the 2004 FIFA World Player of the Year (finishing 10th).

Kaká was a member of the five-man midfield between the 2004-2005 season, although he was mainly seen in a peripheral role behind striker Andriy Shevchenko. Gennaro Gattuso and Clarence Seedorf defensively, as well as Massimo Ambrosini, allowing Kaká to be the attacking midfielder and Rui Costa or Andrea Pirlo as the deep-lying playmaker in Milan and Europe, establishing a strong midfield team. Milan won the Supercoppa Italiana against Lazio, marking the start of the season. Milan finished runner-up in the Scudetto competition, with seven goals in 36 domestic appearances. Andriy Shevchenko's move to Chelsea in the 2006-07 season made Kaká's offense a central point of Milan's offense, whether he played as a striker or as a second striker behind Filippo Inzaghi, as well as in his more offensive midfield role. In a 4–1 group stage victory over Belgium's Anderlecht on November 2, he earned his first Champions League hat-trick.
