2001–2004: Formation and early years

Black Stone Cherry was born in Edmonton, Kentucky. Chris Robertson and John Fred Young, the son of The Kentucky Headhunters' rhythm guitarist Richard Young, began playing music together early in their teens and were soon joined by Wells and Lawhon. Black Stone Cherry was officially established on June 4, 2001. They then took over the practice house, which had been used by the Kentucky Headhunters since 1968, and began to record tracks. They also began performing shows at clubs in the area, and after a short time, they built a large following of people of all ages in the area. The band's first demo on CD, called Rock N' Roll Tape, was released in 2003 on Black Stone Cherry Records.

In May 2006, the band's debut self-titled album was released. After the band finished recording, they returned to Edmonton, where their former school principal had been invited to a homecoming performance in the local middle school gym, which attracted 1500 people. The streets were packed with people holding "welcome home" signs as the band arrived in town.

They released an EP in July 2007, which featured the song "Rain Wizard" and two previously unreleased tracks.

On October 31, 2007, the first live album of the band was announced. It was shot at the Astoria in London, and copies were sold to the audience right after the performance. The album is a strictly limited edition, and as of January 2013 mint copies, Amazon.com is a wired up.
